Puerto Rico Pointers?

I've had to eliminate Mexico from this year's trip due to expensive ass airfare--bummer! Puerto Rico isn't too expensive but I would like some input on good places to stay. I'm a nature, photography, alcohol women seeker. I like the tiki hut on the beach style accomodation, camping and 2-3 star hotels (occassionally). I would love some suggestions.

No suggestions for accomodations, but if you are into photography and nature, the El Yunque rainforest is amazing. Bamboo forests, orchids, parrots, and all sorts of other flowers, it's unlike anything I'd ever seen. Bring a raincoat, however, there is a reason they call it a rainforest. I've got pictures laying around somewhere, I'll see what I can dig up.

Thanks for the great pics! Do you remember what you shelled out for airfare? The cheapest I can find is about $450 from Nashville. Muchos Gracias.

Sorry, it was a business trip. Accommodations and airfare weren't my problem.

If you want to stay around the northwest area of the island, The Rincon Beach Resort is fantastic.

Also, there are some great local restaurants, like Kaplash. $1 Medella's (local beer from Mayaguez) and $1 turnovers filled with pretty much anything you want (crab, lobster, eel, octopus).

You are also pretty close to Mayaguez where there are a couple of casinos

Oh, also, if you find yourself in Old San Juan, do yourself a big favor and try this restaurant (it's a locals restaurant and it is fantastic)

LA FONDA DEL JIBARITO
280 Calle Sol, Old San Juan, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Phone: 787/725-8375

One of the guys that works there, handwrites the menu every day (the daily food consists of whatever they feel like). One of the days I ate there, I had a curried goat dish that was excellent.

Also, when in Old San Juan, check out a shop called Butterfly People. It is a family business where they mount all kinds of butterflys in encased lucite displays. The prices range from $50 to thousands depending on the butterflys and the size. I get one evrytime I go to PR. The last one I got adorns my library and has these african butterflys that look like bats. Very cool.
