Mouth inflammation, ideas?

Afternoon all.

As of yesterday, when I attempt to eat anything of substance in more than one bite per every fifteen minutes, my entire mouth becomes inflamed, it becomes difficult to swallow, my gums hurt, and what can only be described as a migraine accompanies it.

I had been smoking more than I usually do the past weekend ( about a pack and a half a day, happens when you're binge drinking), but other than that, I can't think of any reason why this should happen.

It doesn't appear to be an allergy, unless to pasta, as the two meals I attempted to eat were Fettucini Alfredo and a pasta/chili combination. after about 45 minutes of excruciating pain the inflammation will subside, but the mouth remains red/raw.

Anyone have any clues? This keeps up I'll go to the doc directly, but figured if it wasn't endangering my ability to breath there isn't much need and I'll just wait for it to run its course.

Thanks in advance

Man - I'd go see a doc now. That isn't right and you need to figure out why.

Do you have any sort of tooth ache, or have had any of your teeth taken out in the past few days?

Sometime, inflammations are due to bacteria infections.

Do go check with a dentist or a doctor.

Feel better.

Swelling in the mouth and face is a common allergic reaction and can progress into anaphlactic shock at a moments notice.

On the other hand - do have any steroids that you ever take or steroid inhaler for any reason? One thought is Thrush. I had it twice. It's basically yeast/fungus that manages to get a foothold in your mouth. Eating yogurt helps relieve some of the symptoms but won't get rid of them without treatment. In the past the Dr has given me anise losenges with antifungal medication in them. They don't taste too bad if you don't mine black licorice and they get rid of it pretty quickly.

Either way you should see a Dr if this isn't gone by now.

I am curious what the outcome is/will be. Let us know.

As a dentist I say....

#1 stop smoking right now, and until this goes away. I'd say stop smoking period, but you know better anyways.

#2 See a dentist asap, this could be a LOT of things, from a fungal infection like raenna stated, anug (acute necrotizing uclerative gingivitis, aka really nasty), to an alergy.

#3 See a GOOD dentist, not the cheapest one, this requires someone who can think.

They will most likely give you a perscription mouthwash of some kind but they need to see what it is first.

Hey all, the symptoms have since cleared up. I was going to go to the dentist yesterday, but tried a gamut of stuff to eat and was without worries.

Ustwo: gave up smoking this week due to this whole thing. I had been wanting to quit for a while yet, this gave me the motivation. I've a scheduled appointment with my dentist within the month so I'll inquire then. I think this may have had more to do with the cough I had developing last week coupled with smoking that ran my mouth raw, but that's my medical-ignorant opinion only.

Thanks for all your concerns/advice, this kind of response is why I stick around tfp.
