Starting a buisness . . . - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

I'm hoping to start a buisness and need a bit of guidance. I have about fifty thousand questions, and i hope that some or all of them can be answered rather simply.

1. The number one thing is a buisness plan right? What does a business plan look like? Is there a specific format? What am I to do with the said buisness plan? Is it soley meant for gaining financing?

2. Financing? How hard is it to get a loan for a small buisness? Where are some places to go? My bank? How much is too much? how much is too little?

3. Location? I assume is key as well. I plan on doing the scouting for location in the next few months.

4. Distributers? Where do you find them? I am looking specifically for games. Board Games, Video Games, Card Games, Movies.

5. Rental policys. What sort of red tape do I have to go through if I decide that I want to rent out movies/video games?

We will start with these. Any and all help, as usual is appriciated.

1: There's loads of resources for business plans. Speak to your local bank and they'll most likely have a small business assistance department.
Even your local chamber of commerce or state might be able to offer free assistance.
Your business plan is paramount. Don't 'guess' what your monthly turnover will be, do the plan and then KNOW what you need to turnover each month.

2: Check with your state and government for assistance too. they might have an entrepreneurial program you can tap into.

3: Location is EVERYTHING! Its price will also factor highly in your plan.

4: Speak to the game distributors themselves. A lot of them might try and help you with stock if they don't have any retailers in your area who carry their lines.

5: Again, speak to the distributors. they might have a good plan for prospective clients. As a single store you will get a much worse deal than your local blockbuster will of ourse, but they have the power of a franchise behind them.

Have you considered a franchise or an existing business?

One thing I would suggest doing when starting a business is to make a Pro-Forma income statement. Setting one up will make you evaluate what you execpt to do for business and create goals for your sales. Also, it will show you how much capital you really need and if you will have cash flow problems running your business.

Go to the book store, or get on Amazon and look at some books that have business plans. Partly for financing, partly to force you to think things through. Get a good CPA, a good attorney, have lunch with them and discuss your plans. Look for a monoply. I've owned my own business for 35 years, I love it.
