Family Drama, BigBen style!
Well, forget about the current situation I am in with my wife for a second;
I was working this weekend, and the work was fucking tough. I got home last night (sunday) at about 7pm, and I was exhausted. I took a long shower (just about fell asleep in the shower, it felt soooo good) had something to eat, and off to bed since this morning was the start to a brand new week. My buddies and I call it the *8 Hour Weekend*, whenever we work until late on sunday and then are expected to be bright and shining on monday morning. Brutal. I guess if it was easy, it wouldn't be so much fun... So I am sleeping, and the phone rings at 0330. I look at the display, and it is my mother in Edmonton; I don't answer it for the following reasons: 1. Her and I are for all intents and purposes estranged. We had a falling out years ago that was around the relationship that I had repaired with my father, and she took exception to the fact that I am an adult and capable of making my own decisions. 2. She pulled a stunt this summer when I was taking officer training. She phoned my unit and told them that she was dying and needed to talk to me right away. My unit clerk freaked the fuck out, called the base where I was, they pulled me out of the field and the Padre told me the bad news. I got on the phone, and behold! Mother was fine, just drunk as a skunk. Before I hung up, she had enough time to tell me that I was a good son and she wished we could patch things up. "Not when you are fucking drunk, and not when I am all the way across the country." The Padre really didn't know how to respond to that one. 3. Both her and my stepfather are full-blown alcoholics. Ever wonder what happens when alcoholics retire? It is not a pretty sight. The calendar and the clock quickly lose all meaning, meaning that a 0330 phone call can mean only one thing: Drunken Tirade. So there I am, wondering what the fuck is happening this time, and I look at the phone. There is a message waiting for me. Joy of fucking Joys. "Ben, this is (stepfather). I know we haven't talked in a while, but your mother is not doing well. She is in the emergency *click*" end of message. Reader note: It took me three tries to decypher this code, due to the slurring words and tone. Brutal. Well. Here I am. It is now 10:20, and I am trying to get hold of my brother. If he has the same story, then maybe there is something going on. I just have to wait for now. I can't ask for time off to go to Edmonton for this, unless there is something severe going on. If this is Mom crying wolf like this summer, my boss will not be happy. I am having a hard time concentrating on work, however. A good vent on TFP never hurt anyone. I know that there is little advice you guys can give me, and looking at the other shit going on right now I just think "Great. Fucking great. What else can happen today? Maybe my dog can get hit by a fucking car or the house can start on fire." Did I forget to unplug the Iron before I left?
