Finding someone who owned a car?\ Getting a replacement title

Well I want to buy a car from a friends brother but there is one problem. He doesn't remember who owned it before him so there isn't a title in his name to transfer it from. Is there anyway to find who owned it? If someone had "source" i wonder if anybody could help me. Here is what I know about the car.
I know the VIN number
The old license platers are one the car.
I know an old Minnesota title number but the dmv can't release info on who owns it.
If anybody could help I would greatly appreciate it and make it up to them some way some how.

I've done this.... it's called a storage lien, of course I've only done this in California so I don't know how it goes in Wisconsin but here all you do is find someone that does storage lien's and they set you up, you pick out what you charge per day for the storage and they send the lien to the last registered owner of the car........ usually the owner says fuck it and signs off the car, unless he got ripped off or screwed out of some money... then you don't want the car anyway.

Well I am now wondering if there are any states that I can easily just get a new title for and transfer it to wisconsin. If someone could get me a title I would pay them $$$. I just don't wanna go through a title place and pay $150+ Or is there a way to search for a vechicle title number? or even a license plate search on a set of plates that is about 5-10 years old? If anyone is a police officer I was wondering if they could run the plates for me.???

I think you can just goto DMV and say you lost the title, or it was a paperless transaction or something like that.....when i bought my bike the guy didn't have the title and that was no problem....
