Check engine Light on 95 Ford Explorer

Last week my check engine light came on due to a loose gascap. I tightened the gas cap but the light continues to stay on. I have heard I need to go the dealer and pay them $100 to rest the light. This is absurd. Is there any other way to reset the light???

I heard if you live in the states you can go to autozone I think it was and get it reset for free. Have you phoned your dealer yet and told them the situation? They might do it for free.

Some auto parts stores will reset your light for free. In our area the "Auto Zone" stores will do it as a courtesy.

I have a code reader and use it occasionaly to reset and/or diagnose problems. If memory serves me, the code reader for most 95' and earlier vehicles is pretty reasonable, or under $50. Woud be cheaper than paying the dealer $100, and you would have it next time you need it.

I bought mine on ebay. You might check them out.

If it is a 95, and it is not an OBD II computer (95-96 was the transition year from EEC-IV to EEC-V or OBD II) , you should be able to reset it just by disconnecting the battery for 20 min. Now if there is something wrong, the light will re-appear. However, I believe that you may have an OBD 2 computer because I dont think they integreated the gas cap sensor with the earlier EEC-IV.

It took 5 starts and run cycles(30 minutes per cycle) and the light went off on it's own....

EEC-IV can be read and reset with a voltmeter. Google it, I can't remember how right now.

Because the trouble code set to the ECM, and the ECM looked for a certain amount (value) of time/cycles before determining the problem to be an isolated incident.
