Celica Alternative?

Hello,

I don't keep up with cars, so I can't help my brother, but maybe you guys can. He wants to get a Celica GT-S, but since they're being discontinued, he can't find hardly any. Could you guys recommend a car in a similar price/performance range?

Why cant you find any? Are u looking for a new or used? cuz i did a search on Cars.com, and i found easily 10 in my area. Most toyota certified too. Or you can check carmax. I guess a similar car would be like the eclipse or something.

Last I checked the GT-S was still going to be made in 05 so it shouldn't be a problem. But if you want a faster car for the same price....SRT-4. Faster and a little bit cheaper and rarer to boot.

Not the SRT-4 on no. While it may be a decent car, I can't stand them though (just my opinion) they stll look like a Neon. I just can't get past that fact. They should have at least given the poor thing a different body.

Maybe an RSX-Type S, they are a nice car and fast. Probably more reliable than an SRT-4 too, but I'm not sure on that.

Anyways just my 2 cents, hope your brother has fun test driving cars, I always love doing that.

wait for the chevy cobalt ss supercharged to come out, it should be on sale in about a month, it is cheaper thant he celica and probly faster, reviews on the cobalt sedan seems to be good also.. the new rsx isent that great... they use cheaper material inside to cut cost and they raised the priced compared to last years.

VW GTI
RSX
SRT-4
Colbalt Coupe SS
Civic TypeR
SVT Focus
Imprezza 2.5RS
Tiberon V6 GT
Mazda3 coupe
Mini Cooper
Mitsubishi Lancer
Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V
Saturn ION redline
Scion tC

and possibly Pontiac Soltice

the Scion tC is basically a Celica... they've got a factory option for a turbo, I think, so there's a lil' extra power.

former newt 11-21-2004 06:43 PM

actually the tC has a different engine. the celica gt-s has about 180 hp and 130 lb torque. the tC uses the camry motor and has 160 hp and 16 lb. torque. as far as i know, its much quicker. and frankly i think it looks better too.

Lockjaw 11-21-2004 07:20 PM

The Tc has a supercharger option not a turbo...which is a damn shame. Don't know why they wasted time putting a supercharger on it when they could easily turbo it ang get more power.

I'll drop a vote for the Focus SVT. I got mine for under $14k and it puts down 170hp / 150tq.

type-s. The fit and finish are above average for a car its price especially used. Stock, they can hit high 14's with a decent driver and mid 14's with a a good driver. Not bad for a four banger.

NorCal_DC4 11-24-2004 02:02 AM

The motor in the SRT-4 is built like a brick shithouse. If you can tolerate the interior and exterior design, as well as a less sophisticated suspension, then it's a hell of a bargain.

Otherwise, I'd plug the RSX Type S, the Scion tC (although it's a little less sporting), Mazda3. All of these are slower than the SRT-4, but are more refined in design and execution IMO.

I'm assuming your brother's only interested in new cars that are just beginning their model run... if used cars are an option, then the $19k needed to buy a Celica GTS or SRT-4 can go quite a bit further. :)
