Salvage Yard Prices

OK. So I have a friend who just -gave- me her reasonably beat-up 1988 Corolla. She wants it gone, and I need money in a big way. I've been trying to sell it to an actual owner, but the lack of a title is putting people off.

I figure it for the low end of "Fair" condition in the Blue Book; runs ok but has some compression issues, cracked windscreen, and somewhat of a moisture problem. It's useable, it just takes forever to get up speed and the defroster isn't the most useful thing in the world.

In light of my failure to sell to an actual person, I'm probably gonna end up selling it to a chop-shop or salvage yard. Kelly Blue Book value is $550-$650; do you guys figure I could get that much? I need to sell it fast, so a salvage yard looks like my best bet at the moment.

The one around here will give you $25 if you drive it in.

Without a title I doubt they will take it. Cops frequently visit these places looking for stolen cars, so without a title the cops will say its stolen, then they are the ones getting in trouble.

Without a title there isn't much you can do. Purple Heart and Salvation Army won't take it. I've been to many scrap yards and they all require a title to scrap a vehicle.

Why can't you get a title? It would cost under $100.00 (and probably a couple of weeks) to get a duplicate title from the DMV or whatever you have.

Honestly without a title your probably SOL.

Even with a title, a scrap yard won't give you more then 100 bucks MAX...and I've only seen this for big pickups...you know in the 5-6000 pound range (scrap steel is all about weight).

Sorry for the bad news.

Yea all the other posts are hitting it right on the head of the nail. Without a title no one is going to take it, not even a scrap yard. It sounds like you can easily obtain the title from your friend or have her get a duplicate, if not your gonna have to get a title the long hard way.

We're going down to get a Lost Title Application tomorrow; after that she can legally sign a Bill Of Sale and everything's cool.

Had a couple of offers ( junkyards ) for the $300-$450 range, talking to an actual driver tomorrow about a $400 sale. Here's hoping!
