All Along the Watchtower

Let's face it this awesome song has been covered by more artists and bands than you can shake a stick at. Are you a stickler for the original? Does any particular one of the covers tickle your fancy? Do you not particularly like the song? Let's hear your opinions.

My personal fave is the Dave Matthews version.

Hendrix all the way - I believe that's the version that made it popular in the first place.

I saw a quote from Bob Dylan once; I'm paraphrasing, but the essence was that after he (Dylan) heard Jimi Hendrix play the song, Dylan tried to play his own song so it would sound like Hendrix; Sorry, Jimi Hendrix OWNS "All along the watchtower".

I think Hendrix definitely defines that song. Dylan wrote it, but Hendrix re-wrote it. It's a totally different song....

Bob Dylan's original version is painful to listen to after hearing Hendrix.

i've heard a lot of versions of this song, some were good, others weren't so great - but nobody can ever compare to Jimi

I have a version done by Howie Day in a club, just him and his guitar. Sounds awesome.

The best watchtower moment for me is the Hendrix on the soundtrack of the movie 'Withnail and I' - with Withnail driving on the motorway into London, smashed on Scotch, swerving all over the road.

You'd have to see the movie to appreciate it.

Hendrix all the way, but Dylan is the genius for writing it to begin with.

Dave Matthews' version still gives me shivers.
It has my vote.

Although, i once thought that nothing would ever beat the guitar "wah" in the Hendrix version!

All Your Watchtower Are Belong to Jimi.

I haven't heard this Dave Matthew cover though...I shall have to look into it.
