Music creation process?

OK, i like music and all and like to think i know a bit about it
but i was wondering about some of the "buzz" terms you hear about in the process and what they actually mean?
Same could be asked about other media formats, but i think i'll start here.

Generally the have a producer, engineer, recorder, mixer and then some other jobs as well. What do these people normally do on an album? besides the obvious:
producers produce the album, mixers mix the album, etc

Also what's the big difference between mixing and mastering? People mix the album, does that mean they add all the different tracks/layers/components of the song together, but what's mastering then? some other effect?

i know theres some more as well, but they escape me at the moment....
