music for my funeral

it's a topic i've been thinking about for a little less than a year. whenever i go to a funeral or a wake, the music is so damn boring. i mean, yeah, respect the dead and all that, but for my funeral, i want good music! not saying that it has to get everyone jumping out of the pews, but something to listen to. in fact, for my funeral, i'm not sure if i want anyone to say anything. i just want them to listen. anyways, the only songs i know i want are:

common - "nag champa"
rjd2 - "rain" and "june"
radiohead - "fake plastic trees" and "bulletproof...i wish i was"

what says youS?

Nancy 02-20-2004 01:53 AM

what about the same annoying music as they play in supermarkets and elevators?!

PulpMind 02-20-2004 02:14 AM

every time I'm in a car... and often just walking around with headphones on.. I think, if I were to die suddenly, I would want what I was listening to at that moment to be played at my funeral. I'm sure there will be something meaningful, or at least amusing, about it.
Whether that's some goa trance that leads what I do on a daily basis.. or the irony of me momentarily stopping to listen to 10 seconds of N*sync's pop crap...

yup..

anleja 02-20-2004 07:54 PM

The drum solo to "In-a-gadda-da-vida (sp?)"

Maybe that wouldn't be so good, come to think of it.

I've thought that the Concrete Blonde song "Darkening of the Light" would be a good funeral song.

"Like a ghost is the curtain
In the white light of the morning
Dancing in the morning
Are you there - are you there?
And a shadow like a sadness
Falling all across the garden
Dancing in the garden
Are you there, are you there?

Shine on, friend. goodnight
Why then then darkening of the light

And the leaves at my feet
Whisper sounds so familiar
Are you there? are you there?

Where the clouds pull apart
And the moon changes faces
In the quiet secret places
Are you there? are you there?"

A bad song to play at a funeral would be "Sex Type Thing" by STP.

irseg 02-20-2004 08:15 PM

Being the literal-minded type I am, I think Elton John's "Funeral For a Friend" would be a good choice. Plus it's just a damn cool song. I wish he woulda explored prog rock more.

Mephex 02-20-2004 08:27 PM

Rob D - Clubbed to death.

I picture a cold, dreary, rainy day. The song begins, my casket being lowered, while everyone begins to walk away the beat kicks in.

Ahhh good.

rockzilla 02-20-2004 08:32 PM

Jeff Buckley - Satisfied Mind
Wesley Willis - Dumpster My Ass

Light Years by Pearl Jam

I’ve used hammers made out of wood
I have played games with pieces and rules
I’ve deciphered tricks at the bar
But now you’re gone, I haven’t figured out why
I’ve come up with riddles and jokes about war
I’ve figured out numbers and what they’re for
I’ve understood feelings, and I’ve understood words
But how could you be taken away?

And wherever you’ve gone, and wherever we might go
It don’t seem fair, today just disappeared
Your light’s reflected now, reflected from afar
We were but stones, your light made us stars

The heavy breath, awakened regrets
Backpages and days alone, that could have been spent
Together, but we were miles apart
Every inch between us becomes light years now
No need to be void, or save up on life
You got to spend it all

And wherever you’ve gone, and wherever we might go
It don’t seem fair, you seemed to like it here
Your light’s reflected now, reflected from afar
We were but stones, your light made us stars

And wherever you’ve gone, and wherever we might go
It don’t seem fair, today just disappeared
Your light’s reflected now, reflected from afar
We were but stones, your light made us stars

Just a beautiful song...

Jeff Foxworthy - You know your a redneck if...
Family Guy and Simpsons theme songs.

Yep, that pretty much sums things up for me

If I had to pick something for my funeral's ending credits, maybe Standing on the Edge of Summer by Thursday.

GuttersnipeXL 02-21-2004 12:35 PM

Hell Awaits by Slayer...naturally.

damn good choices. throw in the theme song to the critic, which i think is better than family guy. but no one remembers the show, so oh well. it's symbolism for life, or something like that

gnort 02-21-2004 01:42 PM

The critic was great!

The DVD of the entire series is out now...unfortunately im broke

As for my funeral music I think I'd like a mix of really happy and depressing music...kinda liven things up a bit

frozenstellar 02-21-2004 03:59 PM

Tool - No Quarter (zeppelin version)
Muse - Butterflies and Hurricanes
Butterfly Effect - Beautiful Mine

Ahhh good.

I like this song a lot..

Used in this context, I think it would fit well..

It's a very impressive song.. almost overwhelming, but also relaxing.

brandon11983 02-21-2004 09:06 PM

something by Cannibal Corpse or Anal Cunt... just to offend and piss people off.

wordssmith22 02-22-2004 04:21 PM

oh, and the very ending song of the funeral should be "every move you make" by the police. kinda like how on krusty's statue, it says "see ya real soon kids!" something to remember me by, at the least

ToolBag 02-22-2004 04:49 PM

Break on Through - The Doors
How To Dissapear Completely - Radiohead
Feel Like Making Love - Of course the Kid Rock versioin!

Panopticon 02-23-2004 01:10 PM

I'd play The End by The Doors.

Put words up on a screen so everybody could sing along. It would be great.

Bill O'Rights 02-23-2004 01:59 PM

Well, I'm a Vet, so Taps will be played. Also, due to membership in a few civic organizations, I will, more like as not, have pipers playing Amazing Grace. Actually, Amazing Grace, and Scotland the Brave, are the only songs that I can stand to hear on the bagpipes. Other than that, I really don't know.

World's King 02-23-2004 02:42 PM

Dropkick Murphys - The Gangs All Here
Flogging Molly - For the Grace of God Go I

And for the life of me I can't remember the name of it but the first song John Lennon wrote for his son Sean... Only because I was named after Sean Lennon.

Lunchbox7 02-23-2004 03:35 PM

I want "See you later alligator" played at my funeral

cleanx 02-23-2004 04:15 PM

there is a piano solo of the of full circle by pennywise
its 10 mins long and you have to wait 10 mins before you can hear it after the last song

bundy 02-23-2004 05:22 PM

wagner - liebstod

everyone will be weeping, wailing and beating their heads with rocks...

World's King 02-23-2004 08:16 PM

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Another One Bites the Dust by Queen.

phukraut 02-23-2004 08:54 PM

call me old fashioned, but i'd use Chopin's funeral march.. OR, Arvo Part's Pari Intervallo.

MasterOfDisaste 02-25-2004 01:46 AM

at my guitar teacher's funeral :(
they played "flying in a blue dream" by joe satriani
it was very moving...
for my own I'd have "Always with Me, Always with You" also by Joe Satriani

-Ever- 02-25-2004 12:44 PM

cranberries dreams (call me cheesy, but it's *my* funeral ;) )
system f's out of the blue

I agree, mine would definitely be some Radiohead. Say 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' maybe.

Bobaphat 02-25-2004 02:42 PM

Walking on Sunshine by Katarina and the Waves. Stop being so depressing folks, just because you're dead doens't mean everyone has to be miserable. I am throwing a party when I die and blowing all my future childrens' inheritance on booze for the guests.

Bleed Me Dry 02-25-2004 02:48 PM

Bach's Organ Fugue in G minor.

twilightfoix 02-25-2004 07:57 PM

kanye west - jesus walks
tight ass song and would just sound right at a funeral.

JohnnyRock 02-26-2004 10:18 AM

Well, considering that I won't be there to listen to it I'm thinking anything you would hear on top 40 today--just to be an ass and get torture my friends one last time!!

flamingdog 02-26-2004 10:18 AM

Depends what I died of. If it was cancer, I'd go for Lump by Presidents of the United States of America. If I drowned I'd go for Cry Me A River &c. &c.

02-26-2004 02:06 PM

I've thought about this myself, quite often, along with starting to compile a will and testimony filled with compassion, love, and happiness- not sadness.

Let's see, I would say:
"Angel Standing By", "Life Uncommon"- by Jewel
"Slow Down Time" or "Back to the Sea" (hence my nickname)- by Sky Cries Mary

I am also really in love with the new song from Evenescence, although it is quite sad. "My Immortal" I cry every time I hear it, it is so beautiful.

SpikeQX99 02-27-2004 09:48 PM

How about "at your funeral" by Saves The Day?

Church 02-27-2004 09:53 PM

I think Dreamweaver would be my choice. I love that song.

Dream Weaver
Gary Wright

I've just closed my eyes again
Climbed aboard the dream weaver train
Driver take away my worries of today
And leave tomorrow behind

(chorus)
Ooh dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light
Fly me high through the starry skies
Maybe to an astral plane
Cross the highways of fantasy
Help me to forget todays pain

(chorus again)

Though the dawn may be coming soon
There still may be some time
Fly me away to the bright side of the moon
And meet me on the other side

(chorus again, then fade out with the following
repeated several times...)

Dream weaver

woolley bear 03-07-2004 03:39 PM

cool and rather odd thread I think though as a guitar head id have to have

Joe Walsh - Lifes been good to me so far through a marshall Double stack of course

WELCOME BACK!!!

I think "Fade to Black" by Metallica would be a good song, even though the theme is suicide (which I would never even consider). It's just a beautiful song about death. Excellent solo too!

Francis 03-10-2004 10:38 AM

Sympathy for the Devil- Stones..

Booray 03-10-2004 11:44 AM

A few ideas:
Steve Kimock - Tongue N Groove
Zero - Forever is Nowhere
Grateful Dead - Black Muddy River
Dead - Brokedown Palace

That would be the perfect funeral song!

There's a few other Flogging Molly songs I'd consider. Um, that one about the guy that works on the rails. It's kind of melancholy.

I also think I'd choose Freebird, just because that would be the pinnacle of classic West Virginian behavior.

And Dust in the Wind, because I think it just feels right.

ringogonebad 03-16-2004 11:22 PM

my friends and i have discussed this.......
clayton chooses "watching the wheels go round" john lennon......
.....myself......."peace in the valley" elvis presley

warrrreagl 03-17-2004 09:23 AM

I've decided not to die. I refuse to accept that I will die simply because everybody else ahead of me has so far.

But if I WERE to die, it would be Crosby, Stills, and Nash's "Find the Cost of Freedom." The entire lyrics are as follows:

Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground.
Mother Earth will swallow you, lay your body down.

I know it's a protest song about Kent State, but I think it would be appropriate for me, too.

perripken 04-02-2004 03:33 PM

"Tears in heaven" Eric Clapton

violeteuphoria 04-04-2004 06:21 PM

I'd like Immortal by Evanescence or The Scientist by Coldplay to be played at my funeral. I love both of the pieces and they each fall into a gloomy, haunting, melodramatic mood set so right for something such as a funeral.

Mojo_PeiPei 04-04-2004 09:41 PM

The last song from George Harrison's tribute concert is an awesome song for any funeral...

Lonely days are long
Twilight sings a song
All the happiness that used to be
Soon my eyes will close
Soon I'll find repose
And in dreams you're always near to me
I'll see you in my dreams
Hold you in my dreamsSomeone took you out of my arms
Still I feel the thrill of your charms
Lips that once were mine
Tender eyes that shine
They will light my way tonight
I'll see you in my dreams

The words of Amazing Grace sung to the tune of the Giligan's Island theme.

Getao 04-05-2004 07:55 PM

pink floyd - wish you were here, set controls for the heart of the sun

radiohead - exit music (for a film)
along with fake plastic trees, bullet proof, motion picture soundtrack, optimistic, disappear... so many good radiohead songs for funerals or such...

I'm almost scared about how easy it is for radiohead to fit a funeral...

RenaissanceII 04-06-2004 10:13 AM

the single most haunting version of Amazing Grace -Judy Collins

Swing Low, sweet Cadillac - Dizzy Gillespie

Happy Trails to you - whomever

k1ng 04-08-2004 04:04 PM

I'm going to choose: Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
