I know I posted this on the old board, but summer is coming up, and it's time to travel. So, it's time for SCAN SONG!!!

ScanSong is a radio game that I play in the car with my friends and family on long drives. Since I’ve never encountered anyone else who plays this game, I like to incorrectly surmise that I invented it. Here are the basics:

ScanSong obviously works much smoother with the automatic SCAN button instead of the manual SEEK button found on most car radios. Once the SCAN button has been engaged, the radio will stop approximately five seconds on each station before moving on.

The Object Of The Game is to be the first person to call out the name of the artist heard on each radio station in the SCAN before it moves to the next station. The first person correctly naming the artist is awarded one point and play resumes when the radio stops on the next station. Some extra rules include the following:

1) Once an artist has been correctly named for a particular song, then that song is “out of play” for the remainder of the game (unless a different version exists with a different artist).
2) If an artist is not correctly named, then that song remains in play until it is eventually named.
3) No points are awarded if an artist is named after the SCAN has left that station. However, the song remains in play if it should happen to come around again on the dial (even if someone stupidly called out the correct artist too late).
4) Any player’s guess can be refuted by another player’s challenge. There are several ways to resolve a challenge/dispute, including stopping the SCAN on that particular station until the DJ eventually names the artist, or simply duking it out until you’ve had enough and want to move on with your lives.
5) In the case of classical music, the composer is recognized to be the artist.
6) In the case of holiday or folk music, players may wish to allow the song title to come into play.
7) Jazz aficionados are expected to be smart enough to find something better to do.
8) In the case of artists having several iterations (Eric Clapton, for God’s sake), the level of scrutiny is flexible and may vary from vehicle to vehicle. The driver is recognized as the ultimate authority in settling the game’s degree of difficulty. In other words, if someone guesses Paul McCartney for “Hey Jude,” that’s your problem.
9) If the game needs spicing up, God forbid, players may wish to invoke the “Magic Artist” rule. In this optional version, an artist is designated as the “Magic Artist,” and the SCAN is temporarily suspended whenever that artist’s songs are encountered. Everyone in the vehicle must then sing along with the remainder of that song loudly and heartily before the SCAN can resume. Anyone refusing to sing deserves to be thrown out the window at high speeds. Also, anyone nominating George Michael as a “Magic Artist” similarly deserves to be thrown out the window at high speeds.
10) All players are expected to remain on their honor and only offer guesses for songs and artists they truly know. The purpose of the game is to have fun, not score points. Anyone who guesses “Kenny Chesney” at every country song simply because they know the other players hate country music and can’t possibly refute the guess has obviously missed the point of this game and deserves to be thrown out the window at high speeds.
