Favorite Music Venue

What are all of the TFPer's favorite music venues?

Two of mine are Irving Plaza in NY and Red Rocks in Denver.

Another great one is Mercury Lounge in NY...very small but some amazing bands have played there!

Glory's Sun 10-18-2004 11:46 AM

Lizard Lounge in Dallas

kurty[B] 10-18-2004 12:02 PM

Ditto on Red Rocks in Denver, have not been to too many concerts outside of Colorado, and nothing really compares to a concert at Red Rocks.

Another great outdoor venue is The Gorge in Washington State. An incredible view of the Columbia Basin volcanics and the Columbia River. I heard about it through someone else, and drove 9 hours to see Boston play there a few years ago. What a place!

Tralls 10-18-2004 12:28 PM

I now live in Dallas and have never been to the Lizard Lounge. I have been disappointed in Dallas' overall music scene but will go check it out for sure!

Seandq 10-18-2004 12:34 PM

The Social in Orlando is quite nice.

vanblah 10-18-2004 12:48 PM

Wild Bill's in Memphis. You never know who might come in at 1 or 2 in the morning and start playing with the house band.

The most interesting one I heard about was Yo-Yo Ma ... I would love to have been there for that.

it's a great place..but it's mostly electronic music.. so if you don't like electronic.. well you should go anyway..there are always lots of hot chicas there ;)

Tralls 10-18-2004 01:21 PM

Went to the website and definitely saw lots of hot women!! I do like good techno and haven't gone to a good club in a few years. How is the cover and is there usually long waits outside to get in? Just used to NYC niteclubs.

what kind of electronic do you like?? Alot of good Drum & Bass comes through there as well as some good hard house and trance. The cover is around $15 and the lines aren't too crazy. I haven't been in a while (since I'm in NC) but my friends went a couple weeks ago when Dieselboy was there. Of course it was great as always. Best show ever there was Bjork.

tehpronking 10-18-2004 03:04 PM

The Gorge in eastern Washington.

I used to listen to a lot of acid jazz. Mark Farina was and is one of my favorites. Definitely not a connosuier(sp) on the subject but like Oakenfold, Tranceport is a classic, and like Sasha and Digweed, Van Dyk, others like them. I used to be more up to speed on other DJ's in college and would love any recommendations on some new good DJ's, especially any you hear that might be in Dallas.

God of Thunder 10-18-2004 05:55 PM

Any of the venues in the Detroit area. Mostly because they are the only ones I have been to.

The Palace of Auburn Hills is OK. Not too many bands play Joe Louis or Cobo anymore.

The best is the DTE Energy Music Center (formerly known as Pine Knob). It is an outside venue with a pavillion and a lawn area in back.

pcockren 10-18-2004 07:14 PM

SPAC, Jones Beach amphitheatre, PNC Bank Arts Center(NJ), and MSG

wrongfullyaccuzd 10-18-2004 07:52 PM

9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. Great range of music, every where has a good view of the stage, good times. House of Blues in New Orleans is also good, has a similar feel to 9:30.

FoolThemAll 10-18-2004 10:00 PM

Magic Stick in Detroit. Saw Ted Leo and the Dismemberment Plan there so far.

DTE Energy Music Theater (formerly Pine Knob) in...I forget. Outside of Detroit. Saw Wierd Al, Ozzfest 2001, Pearl Jam (Riot Act tour), and Curiosa 2004 there.

Yeah. I love it. Can't decide if I prefer it over the smaller venue of the Magic Stick, though.

macsmith230 10-18-2004 10:39 PM

In Seattle I like the Paramount (great ceiling to look up at while waiting for the band to start) or Graceland (dirty place perfect for good music). But my favorite place just for ambience is the Middle East in Cambridge, Mass. The sound isn't the best, but it's just got such a nice vibe that it can turn lots of average shows into memorable events.

Lover's Spit 10-18-2004 10:41 PM

Massey Hall in Toronto is a heaven for rock music, the old acoustics are just spectacular. I saw Wilco there last weekend, and once they ironed out a little early-show feedback, I was just in awe.

I also saw Sarah Harmer at McPherson Playhouse in Victoria on Friday, which sounded great as well.

There's something about those old theatres that just makes rock sound beautiful.

tspikes51 10-20-2004 11:17 AM

Bogart's in Cincinnati. Went and saw POD for the second time this summer there, and it was an incredible atmosphere. Very intimate setting for such a headliner band.

optik_nerve 10-22-2004 07:26 PM

I really like the House of Blues in Orlando or the Masquerade in Ybor City.

10-22-2004 08:40 PM

it's a small hole called Gallery of the Senses where they hold intimate D&B shows. All the other great venues (quaint, yet very cool) are either closed or some R&B bastards or "dance club" took it over......

MSD 10-22-2004 10:45 PM

Toad's Place in New Haven, CT www.toadsplace.com

Empress Ballroom in Danbury, CT www.empressballroom.com (For some reason I like it despite the fact that it's a brick block with a 6-foot-ceiling with crappy acoustics)

Those are the two I'm usually at for shows.

Been following the Dead have yeah!

SPAC in NY is a cool outdoor venue
The Gorge rates equally with Red Rocks (Morrison, CO!) in my opinion.
The Egg in New York, for the unmatched acoustics
The Wetlands was a good place to see a show too..
...oh yeah, I liked The Bluebird in Denver too.

superiorrain 10-24-2004 09:30 AM

universal hall - berlin, germany
or
brixton academy - london, england

aberkok 10-24-2004 11:32 AM

Used to work at Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall in Toronto. Saw many great shows. Caught a bit of Prince once at Massey - if you are not a fan then see his live show!

Favourite place to see jazz in Toronto is the Montreal Bistro. Not as snotty as the more famous Top 'O the Senator.

chance 10-29-2004 08:11 AM

Cynthia woods in woodlands texas. You can Lounge out on a big hill, and check out the stars. (Bring the off)

thesupermikey 10-29-2004 08:22 AM

The Palace in Louisville and Bogarts in Cinni are both cool. The Exit/In in Nashville is a really interesting place to see live music as well. As for big places, Deer Creek in Indy.

OFKU0 10-29-2004 11:54 AM

Barrymores in Ottawa is pretty solid. Saw some greats there like Alvin Lee, Al Dimeola, Pat Travers and Ronnie Hawkins to mention a few. The Chaud used to be the place many moons ago.Unfortunately kareoke is still going strong so seeing great bands in small venues is like trying to catch a butterfly with ovenmitts on.

I loved The Wetlands! Saw Spearhead there a couple years ago. Went down there but they were sold out, started chatting with the guy hanging out front and it turned out he was with Spearhead and put 4 of us on the list. So I got to see an amazing band at an amazing venue for free!

scott_p_1 11-03-2004 04:32 PM

My favorite place is definately Zaphod's in Ottawa. Great place for punk and indie rock. For the nerds too, they also have Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy themed drinks (Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster anybody?).

OFKU0: Agreed that Barrymoores is cool. But I found that for the 8 months I spent in Ottawa, it was pretty much just cover bands advertised there.

Phos 11-03-2004 04:50 PM

House of Blues, Orlando.

mused76 11-03-2004 06:07 PM

The Agora

The Agora - Cleveland, OH. You can usually meet the band behind the back because there's only a see through fence between you and the band before they board the bus. Usually they stop and talk to fans who wait out there for long amounts of time in ridiculas winter weather *cough cough*

jimk 11-04-2004 06:05 AM

Chicago

large - the chicago theater

medium - vic theater

small - abbey pub

Averett 11-04-2004 06:27 AM

I'll third SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga, NY). And the Egg (Albany NY) does have great acoutsics.

In NYC the Knitting Factory and the Village Underground are fantastic small venues.

tspikes51 11-07-2004 09:20 PM

Taft Theater, Cincy.

illogan 11-07-2004 10:43 PM

of all the places I've been (and it's not many) the ones that stick out the most are:
Red Rocks (Denver)
and
1st Avenue (Minneapolis)
other than that it's just been warehouses and bars :)
