From the Catholic Encyclopedia the eight beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount:

Quote:
The text of St. Matthew runs as follows:

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 3)
Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land. (Verse 4)
Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5)
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. (Verse 6)
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7)
Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8)
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9)
Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)
edited to add: Just to clarify, these are not from the "Catholic" denomination, but rather for all of Christians and even those who consider Jesus to be a prophet, such as the Jews and Muslims.

here is another take on it, word wise, that changes the meaning some. It is from the new american standard, which was translated from the original or oldest documents (scrolls and such)
Matthew chapter 5 verse 3-
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted"
"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth"
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied"
"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy"
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God"
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God"
"Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"
"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you"

This "translation" presents more of the personal responsibility and personal relationship with Jesus that I feel was intended.

I have heard that they are the downtrodden, the hopeless, but also those who recognize that they have no special spirituality or spiritual insight apart from God.
