Probably a good way to look at it...

I have no idea what sort of response, if any, this will elicit, but I received it from a friend, and thought it deserved to be shared with others...

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather, to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy shit...what a ride!"

I've never liked the idea of a journey as a metaphor for the human condition. In fact, I've never liked any kind of metaphor for it. Being a human being is difficult to reduce to a metaphor because it is a metanym (the thing itself).

Having said that, I recognize that I will only get out of life what I put into it. I try to view it as a cost/benefit kind of thing. For example, "Smoking dope feels good, but going to prison on federal drug charges and being ass-raped would probably not feel good. So I'll avoid the stuff for now."

But that usually implies that you'd want to do it again...
I'm not sure I'd like to live again. I think there needs to be a balance between safety and adventure. I don't like the whole "cost / benefit" deal because it keeps me too safe. I do believe in investing in my future while having abit of fun in the meantime.

I never really go in for any of these little phrases either. They always are just kind of empty things that people put into AIM profiles or something like that. But if you have to choose one of them, it should be "live fast, die young, leave a pretty corpse".

I really prefer a more considered, rational approach to life's journey. This sort of desription seems to me to be desperately unconsidered.

This assumes that the goal of life is to do things in a certain manner towards the end of death. Death just happens, and all we can do is live with Good Faith towards our ethics, morality, and sense of what is best for us. This quote suggests that living with reckless abandon is good, but there is no reason to believe that. It suggests a life without reflection, which creates a life without self-meaning. At the least, some deliberation and care for the self will create some self-meaning which can help someone rest easy that they've lived well before they die.
