Which Perspective = Better?
 

K, neither of these photos turned out how I wanted them too. I was hoping the shadows would have been better caught, but I do not think there was enough light. A solid blue sky in the background would have been impressive too, but I wanted to get opinions on which perspective looks better.

I know which one I prefer, but I wanted your opinions before I express mine.

To make this thread not seem so drab, here's a shot I did like how it turned out.

I prefer the landscape orientation. It cuts out some of the overexposured portion of the sky. It's nice though. I've got a thing for receding lines and paths & such...boardwalks, railroad tracks, fences, etc.

That last one is a beauty!

I like the first one, looking up. The second probably would be ok if you cropped it down to emphasize the road, otherwise the chopped off tops of the trees are obvious.
I agree, the last one is very nice.

I like the first one better... For me, I liked the first one more when the second little section of sky is cropped out.. It seemed to bring focus more on the path... Something list this...

Yeah, I liked the first one better. To me it has more feel of depth, and out of the two captured the feeling of being there a little better.

That's a good point Chamaeleontidae, I didn't even notice that second section of sky this morning. I'll have to crop it out this evening, and see how that feels. I want to keep the path running down the middle.

Why is it that the definition in the tree on the right is so much more apparent in Chamaeleontidae's re-post than in the original? Is it just me? Regardless, I like it! I think that texture is one of the things that drew my eye to the second one first.

Must be nice to have such pretty trees and snow to photograph. :)

LOL Very persceptive of you... I noticed the comment by kurty[B] that the shadow definition was lacking in the shot, so I was screwing around with the gama of the pic, before I cropped it, to see if I could lighten the shadows... I was at work so I didn't have photoshop, and I was limited in what I could do... SOooo basically I was just playing... :)

Aha! I am totally photoshop illiterate. I have so much to learn.

I was going to post and say that I definitely like the first picture better but I think that's pretty much the consensus already :)

I will say that I like the untouched version better - I think its more artistic and lends to the barrenness of the photo - the touched up version (while nice) seems like a hundred other photos that exist out there. The bleakness of the shadows and darkness of the tress in contrast with the vivid white of the snow is really startling and much more expressive than the photoshoped version.....

I like the first better because the trees aren't cut off and it gives a better sense of depth because of that. However I like the slight more detail of the trees in the second shot.

Personally I would dodge and burn certain areas to bring out tree detail and balance the blown out sky, but thats all preference.

Second shot is nicely balanced. :)

I am with the general concensus here... the first one is better because the scene is vertical.

Cham's editing really helps. Is there a way to get rid of the blue fringe (I think that what's refered to) around the tree tops?

And yeah, that 3rd photo is niiice. What's with the naked firs? doesn't look especially look like it's from a fire... drought perhaps?

try making them B/W............for effect/contrast

1962 - Lincoln Lake Fire burned 700 acres near the junction of Lincoln Lake and Resthouse Meadow Trails unknown cause


1964 - Resthouse Meadow Fire burned 1076 acres including the Resthouse structure caused by humans

The damage we're seeing is probably from the 1962 fire. Unfortunately it's at such an altitude that trees have trouble regrowing. It's been long enough for the burn marks to mostly disappear though.

I finally got around to tweaking this. Cropped, Black & White, fiddled with the levels to get rid of the clouds in the background.
