That last one looks like he's thinking, "Well, shit."

Any sympathy I might have for this pathetic figure is lost when I think of the thousands he's tortured and killed.

And suddenly the great dictator is a sad old man, dying of cancer.

If America dont want a real civil war, they seriously need to execute him before he can die of natural causes.

I hope the Americans stop whinning the next time pictures of their POW's end up on the 6 o'clock news. these pictures show how the states mock the Geneva Accords when it doesn't suit them yet when thier troops get caught and end up on TV or the newspapers they should not whine saying they can't do that. not trolling or anything just my opinion

the americans don't need to execute saddam they need to have a trial where Iraqi's the people who suffered most decide his fate not an occupying force.

Saddam Hussain is dying of cancer. if he dies of natural causes in American custody (sic?) it will look like he was murdered and create waves of violence across Iraq. They need to set up the show trial, hand him down his death sentence and kill him legally (and there are plenty of Iraqi's who will be happy to kill him or see him killed on America's behalf)

if you just keep him locked up and one day find him dead in his cell, it is just going to look really bad - Im sorry if my first post wasnt clear debaser.

I tried to search 'Saddam Hussain cancer' and got no where.

Then I remembered its SF so I put in 'Saddam Hussain cancer socialist'' and found a couple of small referances.

Report: Saddam Hussein Has Cancer

Sofia Morning News

The ousted Iraqi dictator, who is currently under custody with the coalition forces, suffers from cancer of lymph glands, Kuwaiti Al-Anba daily reads, citing an Iraqi official. According to the daily, the disease is in an advanced stage, so doctors predict the former dictator would probably live a couple of years more.

Doctors came out with the fatal diagnosis while making thorough medical checking of Saddam Hussein at his capture near his hometown of Tikrit in December 2003.

Allegations of Saddam's illness appeared during the military campaign in Iraq last year, when one of his private doctors, residing in Syria, claimed that the former dictator suffered from cancer.

Is the BBC better?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/908930.stm

Quote:

The Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein, is reported to be suffering from lymph cancer and to be preparing to undergo chemotherapy.
An influential Arabic newspaper, the London-based Ash-Sharq al-Awsat, says a family council led by his youngest son, Qusay, is ready to take control if he dies.

The Saudi-financed paper quoted an Iraqi doctor "with an excellent reputation" as saying that a medical team of three French doctors, one German and one Swede was looking after the Iraqi leader.

The report was denied by the Iraqi embassy in London.

Saddam Hussein maintains an iron grip despite Iraq's chronic problems

The doctor "revealed that the presidential office did not allow any Iraqi doctor to join the special medical team treating Saddam," the paper said.

Western newspapers have reported several times in recent years that Saddam Hussein has cancer.

He appeared to be in good health during a visit by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in early August.

The Iraqi leader has retained a firm grip on power since 1979, with no serious domestic challenge, despite the strain caused by 10 years of UN sanctions and almost daily US and British air strikes.

The special medical team was brought together by a committee chaired by the president's personal secretary Abd Humud, the Arabic daily said.

The doctor, who is attending a medical conference abroad, said one of the presidential palaces in a Baghdad suburb had been turned into a private clinic for the Iraqi leader and medical equipment had been brought in from Jordan.

He is suffering from pain in the joints, breathing difficulties, poor eyesight, temporary memory loss and lack of concentration, the doctor is quoted as saying.

Previously, Saddam Hussein had "refused to submit to chemotherapy," the doctor said, "but he will have to submit to this solution, which has been recommended by a team of Iraqi doctors specialising in cancer".

An "independent Iraqi source" quoted by the paper said the Iraqi president chaired a family meeting at which the special council was formed.

The meeting was attended by his personal secretary Abd Humud, his two sons Uday and Qusay, and his three brothers Barzan, Watban and Sabawi.

The president's wife did not attend the meeting, since she is under semi-house arrest with her two daughters Raghad and Rana in the Awjah presidential palace, the source said.

Barzan al-Takriti, who has fallen out with Saddam Hussein according to Arab reports, is today a simple "adviser" within the family council, which is already helping to run Iraq's affairs, the source said.

Oh.

Is reported.

I guess I'll withhold my own judgement as to the veracity of this until I see some more data.

Could be, but you're right.

In a few months it won't matter.

I'll bet my left nut that if the Iraqis get him, he's dead.

I think that in this particular case the value of demonstrating to the people of Iraq that Saddam really is in US custody, and really won't be coming back in glory to judge the Ba'athist loyalist and the American collaborator, far outweighs the infringement of Saddam's Geneva Convention rights.

He's still getting a trial instead of being lashed over the muzzle of a 155mm cannon and bisected at the waist. IMHO, this is testament enough to the willingness of all involved to respect the principles of due process and the rule of law.

The point of the Geneva convention isnt that it only applies when you or your side think it should.

I mean, I really dont want to state the obvious, but you can understand the point of "rules of war" can't you?

The Geneva convention just bothers me a little because sometimes it feels like we're the only ones who follow it.
As for Saddam, I can't believe he has cancer. This certainly puts a twist into things. I hope we can expect a quick trial.

I hope when you say "us" you are not meaning the USA because these pics are in direct violation of the Geneva Accords, and were the MP's following the Accords when they were discharged for abusing POW's?

here's the story as CNN put it (sorry CNN's not that credible i'll find a better one

Those pictures looked like some marine had a camera along. I am deeply troubled that the US can so blatantly violate the Geneva Accords to such an astonishing degree!

Ok I had a hard time keeping a straight face while I said that.

so marines with cameras are allowed to take pictures of POW's to show thier families and that doesn't violate Geneva. are you denying it is a violation. It shouldn't be hard to find the people in the pictures and punish them. What about the MP's beating POWs or does that make you laugh too. No matter what the US uses the Geneva Accorda as it suits them plain and simple.

I'm saying I don't give a shit. A couple of US kids in Iraq who take a few pictures of one of the most evil men in the last 30 years, does'nt bother me.

Plus I'm not sure if its a violation since the pictures don't seem to be pictures taken for offical purposes, I haven't seen them in a government release, and they may well have been leaked. If it weren't for the internet I don't think we would have ever seen them.

But hey if YOU think we should go punish some GI for this, be my guest. Why don't you try to get a petition going and see how far that gets you.

I believe this is the article in question (bold face, mine)

LINK

--------------------------------------------------

Article 13

Prisoners of war must at all times be humanely treated. Any unlawful act or omission by the Detaining Power causing death or seriously endangering the health of a prisoner of war in its custody is prohibited, and will be regarded as a serious breach of the present Convention. In particular, no prisoner of war may be subjected to physical mutilation or to medical or scientific experiments of any kind which are not justified by the medical, dental or hospital treatment of the prisoner concerned and carried out in his interest.

Likewise, prisoners of war must at all times be protected, particularly against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity.

Measures of reprisal against prisoners of war are prohibited.

-----------------------------------------

Now it seems to me that you could look at this two ways. First, that the soldiers are violating this rule by taking pictures of him. BUT, are they being taken with the goal of public dissemination? In otherwords, do such soldiers, who are doing the capturing, represent the public?

Personally, I would argue no.

Also, I think it very clear that pictures of POW's put on the local TV does represent exhibition and is in violation of this article.

Whereas Saddam's pictures were posted with the specific purpose of proving to the Iraqis that we got him, no question.

So a lot of grey area, but I can't see reason to make this the center piece of an argument about the way we conducted the war.
