Jesse Jackson to Alabama

-------------------
Jesse Jackson to visit Capital City today

MONTGOMERY -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who has criticized the University of Alabama for not hiring a black football coach, will visit the Capital City today.

Jackson is expected to talk about the decision to hire former UA quarterback Mike Shula, as well as several other subjects, including prison reform and racial discrimination in banking and lending.

Jackson will speak at 6 p.m. today at New Life Baptist Church, 1943 Rosa Parks Ave.

Supporters said Jackson is scheduled to speak at 9 a.m. Wednesday during a rally planned at the state Capitol to protest the UA coaching decision.
---------------

Many believe that it was Jesse Jackson's opinions that caused the lone African American candidate, Sylvester Croom, to be eliminated from the coaching search.

Any thoughts? Is Jesse still doing any good out there, or has he de-evolved into an extortion-fueled parody?

Who believes this? Bill O'Reilly?

Give me a break. I usually don't question hiring practices since they are so subjective, but in this case Croom was much more qualified than Shula. There was only one negative : his race.

Alabama had a chance to turn over a new leaf after the Price debacle. They could've followed Notre Dame's lead and brought in the first-ever black SEC football coach. Instead, they quickly threw Shula's name as the frontrunner, so they wouldn't have to deal with the pressure of hiring a black man.

Jackson's cause is just, as it usually is, but again I would question what he thinks he can gain out of this. Does he really think Alabama's good ol' boys were capable of making the right decision? Forget it Jesse, its Alabama.

I'm in complete agreement with you that Croom was the most qualified candidate and the obvious choice. However, the question is still out there that he had a better shot at getting the job BEFORE Jesse Jackson stepped in.

The best man should be hired for the job period. Race or sex should never have a bearing on ones decision.

It's a damn shame that the world doesnt operate that way

I'm still not sure where you're getting that from. I haven't heard anything about it. Could you give more info?

I did a quick search on Google and found that Jackson made his first comments about this on Monday, May 5th.

The AD Mal Moore interviewed Shula on Sunday, May 4th. Shula's name had already appeared in articles as the frontrunner by then.

Moore then interviewed Panthers assistant Williamson early Monday. Later that day, he interviewed Croom.

I think Jesse Jackson has never been much more than an antagonist and an agitator. He has probably done more harm to human rights than good. I don't understand how he can portray himself as being the great mediator that he sees himself as being. I think most people just wish he would shut up and go home. He rails about the sins and trespasses of mankind but sure can't stand for anyone looking at him very close. The word hypocrite seems to be most fitting!
