Artificial Virginity Device for the Average Woman

I came across this story today and felt the need to share, I've never linked a whole article so hopefully I do this right.

You can find the whole story here from NPR, along with the transcript: Artificial Virginity Device Sparks Backlash In Egypt : NPR

Quote:

Conservatives in Egypt are in a lather over a new device that promises to simulate the bleeding a virgin bride experiences on her wedding night. Politicians are calling the device an assault on Islamic and Arab values. But some young women say it's the inevitable result of Egypt's double standard when it comes to premarital sex.

The online ad from Gigimo promises women "no more worry," because they can restore their virginity for just $29.95. The ad says the "artificial virginity hymen" fits in the vagina and, upon penetration, oozes a bloodlike liquid.
I'd love to hear your opinions on this. If you agree that Egypt should ban the sale of this device, can you tell me why?

Personally, I find this to be really sad. But what's even more sad is that it will probably sell very well in places like Egypt where a woman is required to be a virgin on her wedding night.

If your bride's virginity is important to you, she shouldn't lie about it. Essentially this is a device that is intended and functions solely to commit fraud; to enter into an agreement under false pretenses. If a device lacks any legitimate use, I see nothing wrong with banning it.

The fact that virginity is required of women as a matter of course (and not of men) is unfortunate, but a separate issue.

Edit: Although, the fact that such a device might be used to protect a woman from assault gives it a legitimate use that would remove any justification for banning it.

If they mandate a religion (and my guess is that they have)... then they shouldn't be offended/surprised that people hide their true beliefs.

Agreed but it does side-step the issue. My feeling is that a product like this will allow the double standard to go relatively unchallenged. For that reason alone, part of me wants to see it banned.

Fraud, shady behavior, trickery ... the thing I find most disturbing with this picture is how inhuman it all seems to me. But ohh well, thats another thread.

I think it should be banned because it goes against their beliefs, I mean, I don't side with their beliefs, but fundamentally by extension of all logic they arrived to virginity at wedding bed then yes, this is fraud.

Ha ha

There should be a site called "CherryFax," where you can check up on that hymen's history.

Also discussed, albeit briefly, under the title Sick and sad products.

this makes the arab women a little more attainable....

interesting!

Before he made his edit, inBOIL said everything I'd say about the issue. Then he edited it and totally changed my agreement.

Utterly bizarre what people come up with.

It would be cool if the AVD used movie squibs that emulate gunshots.

"One owner, low mileage. Always garaged; never penetrated."

Next line could be: Drivers Wanted!

Hooray for the Muslin Ladies, & Hey, don't they deserve a break? Or rather a non-break/sorry this is going down the toilet fast. C'mon already -they already hafta wear some butt ugly headcoverings. Now this.

Hot diggity dog! I can't wait to use this product to restore the virginity of my current partner's other orifices.

...like her nostrils.

I dunno. In a country where a woman can be beaten and killed for not being a virgin, $30 sounds like a pretty inexpensive insurance policy.

This is exactly what I was going to post.

Spooky.
