std's taboo at tfp?

Pretty much anything about human sexuality can be discussed here, but it seems like std's aren't brought up much.

I'm wondering if the community atmosphere and the fact that relationships develop between members of the community might make some people hesitate to discuss std's.

I might be totally off-base here. Just something I was wondering...

arch13 11-22-2003 10:13 PM

I could have sworn there was an aids testing thread in the past 10 days her on the board.

oberon 11-22-2003 10:17 PM

Nah. We've discussed it on many occasions, including the one arch13 points out.

Perhaps the majority of TFP'ers are not knowingly affected by STD's. That may be why it is not often discussed.

lady 11-22-2003 10:45 PM

I know about the testing thread.

phredgreen 11-22-2003 11:29 PM

if you have a curiosity/concern about a specific disease or std's in general, do a quick search and revive an old thread, or start a new one and see if the discussion takes off.

Perhaps our sexual enlightenment prevents us from finding ourselves in situations whose pursuit might entail an infection with a STD....

motdakasha 11-22-2003 11:47 PM

I know people who have STIs, but that's the extent of my personal life experience with them. Other than that, I can spew off what you probably already know about them.

RoboBlaster 11-23-2003 07:46 PM

Actually, lots of people have them, and many don't even know it. After all, 65 million people in America have an incurable STD.

I'm going to detach my own personal feelings from that rather thoughtless comment, and just say that A) bad things happen to good people, even good people who have all the facts
B) condoms are not Kryptonite shields against all dieases, and C) many people who have STD's don't even know they have them.

twotimesadingo 11-23-2003 08:18 PM

I got jock itch, once...

But I guess that's not really an STD.

OFKU0 11-23-2003 08:36 PM

Got crabs once. I knew the wonderful donor had them, but she was so fucking hot, I didn't care,...until the action started. Fun. Lets do all the laundry again.

I suggest that you turn back to third when the crustaceans are guarding home.

I got the gift that keeps on giving from my then wife. She called me at work and asked me to come home. When I got there she asked me if I was sleeping around cause she just got a call from a "friend" who had Clamidea and wanted to know if I gave it to her and she gave it to him.It was an interesting way to find out your marriage was over.

Craven Morehead 11-24-2003 08:17 AM

I had chlymidea once. While married. Was not fooling around and neither was my wife. Took forever to get it out of our systems. Took a while to determine the source of the infection, turned out to be the hot tub/whirlpool that I often used at a hotel I stayed at frequently. Never have been in one since. Dr.'s office said they have seen very young girls (2 years old) come in with severe chlymidea infections from hot tubs. They can be a breeding ground for infections. And this one was at a very nice national chain hotel.

Was also a very 'interesting' conversation with my wife. But we were both innocent. Boy, that was fun.....

I've been affraid of water most of my life... never had this problem. But it does prove my point.

STDs are a strange subject. Most people don't talk about them openly because most people have the thought in the back of their head that everyone else is a potention sexual partner. At least that's why I don't openly share all the shit I've been through with HIV/AIDS. But then again I just told a few thousand people. :)

Ugh.....the university I attend has the largest, most flashiest student recreation center in the country...one of the flashy items is a hot tub with a 50 person capacity. I've never been in it because the thought of all the STIs that could be floating around in there just gross me out, but my girlfriend has used it on occasion. I know they use a crapload of chemicals in it-the last time my girlfriend went there she reeked of chlorine for days- but still.

31Friction 12-17-2003 11:58 AM

I think this is a good post. STD awareness should be discussed often because sometimes it can get moved into the back of your mind. I've got 2 friends that knowingly have incurable STD's. One with AIDS and the other has Herpes. Both were complete shocks to our group of friends. It is very important to get checked and practice safe sex. It IS a matter of life and death...
