Contraception and the Quality of Sex Life - Survey Indicates that IUD Users Worry Less About Getting Pregnant and Can Enjoy Sex More

LOS ANGELES -- According to a national survey of sexually active women between the ages of 20 and 45, IUD (Intrauterine Device) users seem to almost never worry about getting pregnant, are better able to focus on the 'moment,' enjoy more spontaneity and do not experience the routine 'hassles' associated with birth control endured by those who use condoms or the pill.

The survey, which was conducted by Research International for FEI Women's Health, asked women who use condoms, the pill or an IUD how their contraceptive method affects their sex lives.

Percent of users who never worry about getting pregnancy during sex
Of those surveyed, almost 90 percent of IUD users reported never having to worry about getting pregnant during or after sex -- an experience reported by only 63 percent of pill users and 38 percent of condom users.

The survey also revealed that almost 100 percent of IUD users feel that they can focus solely on enjoyment and pleasure during sex. Once foreplay begins, these women report being able to relax and completely enjoy themselves. In comparison, only 88 percent of pill users and 63 percent of condom users report feeling totally uninhibited by contraceptive worries during sex.

"Over the years, I have talked to many of my patients about finding a birth control that allows them to worry less about becoming pregnant and enjoy more spontaneity with their partner," says Laura MacIsaac, Director of Family Planning of Albert Einstein Medic al College and Chief Medical Offic er of FEI Women's Health. "The IUD is both highly effective and low maintenance, which means that IUD users do not share the hassle and pregnancy anxiety that pill and condom users experience. IUDs require no prescription refills, no daily pills and virtually nothing to impede spontaneity.

Percent of users who describe their method as hassle-free
Compared to only 75 percent of pill and 45 percent of condom users, more than 97 percent of IUD users describe their method as hassle-free. Further, 24 percent of women surveyed who use the pill experience a decrease in libido and 75 percent report having some hormonal side effects; yet another reason why these women may have reported more worry and stress in regard to their sex lives.

The ParaGard(R) T 380A Intrauterine Copper Contraceptive is a hormone-free IUD that is more than 99 percent effective without the hassles and hormone- related side effects of the pill or the inconvenience of condoms.

About the Survey

The survey was conducted by Research International. The survey was conducted via the internet from January 31 - February 3, 2005. It polled 503 heterosexual, sexually active women, 20-45. It was conducted at the 95% confid ence level.
I am officially starting lobbying for IUD's over hormonal birth control. I am so incredibly happy with mine! I totally agree with this survey- at least with the results. Not having to worry about pregnancy totally makes sex a hell of a lot more enjoyable- for me at least.

feel free to PM me with questions about IUD's

Okay, I was always totally picturing you as a guy. Now I know differently.

Anyways.

It only compares IUD users to Condoms (used per action) and the Pill (used daily) -How do Norplant users feel in comparison?

I know since I've had my vasectomy my wife says she enjoys sex a whole lot better... Now she only has to worry about getting pregnant from her boyfriend.

I have to say, it would take a lot for me to switch to IUD. Not because I don't like it, but I'm satisfied with my current method. I've been on the Ring for a few months and LOVE IT. No side effects whatsoever, certainly nothing like being on the patch for the year before that...

Of course, we are so cautious that we use condoms AND birth control, but it doesn't take away from our enjoyment of sex in any way. I don't know if anything could do that!!! But hey, if IUD works for you, go for it!! Whatever makes your sex life happy...

My girl and I agree with that statement 100% aside from the small side effects of breakthrough bleeding and some pain when the cervix is hit during intercourse... still well worth it..

tres: How bad is the pain for her with the cervix-hitting you mentioned? My wife is going to be getting an IUD and she's wondering about the possible side effects. I never saw that one listed, but I'm big enough that I do bruise her cervix on occasion and wonder how much worse it'd be with an IUD.

She is just starting her second period with it in, During the first month she bled intermittantly, and had stong cramps from the IUD (stated it was different than period cramps) Now shes pre-period cramping and it hurts more than usual.
During sex if i thrust too hard and hit her cervix it is an extreme pain. Compared to w/o the IUD it was just an uncomfortable pain. This pain though, might actually be a good thing, we have been trying new positions that avoid contact with the cervix that we are liking ALOT!

btw: She has the non-hormonal paraguard that you keep in for 10 years. Me being in the medical field I watched the insertion, and it was pretty cool to watch, although a little painful for her when they measured the depth of the uterus. The thing is so small you could fit in inside a large coffee stirrer straw. Any questions feel free to PM, Sage helped us out alot when we were thinking about it, and doing it..
