Injuries

I was prompted to post this after seeing that pic from RAMONES about Sammy Sosa. that was SO lucky.

What kind of sports injuries have you had or seen?

I have videos on my comp of a tennis player rolling his ankle, and a soccer player getting hard tackled and his ankel broken.

A little disturbing to watch, but interesting nonetheless.

Myself, I fell while rollerblading a few years ago.. Chipped a tooth and had to get "plastic surgery" on the gash that resulted on my chin.

Have yet to break a bone in my body though (knock on keyboard).

11 stitches in my chin from playing hoops. Smashed heads with another dude. I tore all the ligaments in my right ankle last summer playing hoops also. It's still not right. I'm just starting to face the fact that I'm gonna have to get surgery to get it fixed. I'm gonna have to go to my doctor soon.

I saw a 15 year old kid break his arm in his football game. It broke like a twig. I never heard anything that loud in my life. He tried to brace his fall with his left arm and it got jammed and 4 dudes fell on top of him. His forearm folded in half.

Nose sliced open from a hockey stick during some floor hockey, torn ACL from Volleyball, bruised rib from Ultimate, Ankles are not the greatest, wrist hurt from Hockey. Only the ACL was really bad.

As for witnessed. On my hockey team last year one of the players had his ear almost ripped off by a slap shot from the point. The puck hit him a glancing blow off the ear. The top part of his ear was under the helmet but the bottom wasn't. (think holding a piece of paper down on a table and rippng the bottom). something like 45 stiches. He needed to go to a plastic surgeon to fix things and he still has hot/cold sensitivity.

We play Ultimate Frisbee every summer in an informal league. It's one of most enjoyable things I'm involved with in life, as I am one of the guys who built the league up from day one... but accidents happen.
Two summers ago, the biggest guy who plays with us chucks the disc full force, into the face of a guy running towards him 10 feet in front of the point of release. Total accident, but the guy who was hurt starts screaming that the other guy did it on purpose... so a brawl erupts between the two teams. The guy ended up needing quite a few stitches, the frisbee was a little jagged and had cut up his cheek.
Worst sports injury I've had was an elbow in the face causing me to bite through the edge of my tongue while playing basketball. Nothing awful, but I couldn't talk or eat normally for weeks.
Most amusing injury I've seen was aforementioned huge guy running full speed, watching nothing but the disc he was trying to catch, and he slams into a tree.
Weirdest injury I've heard about is pretty tragic, my Grandmother told me that at a 1940s era HS football game, they used a real gun to signal the start of the game, and the principal who was firing it accidently shot it into the stands and killed a boy. Very weird event.

seems to me that American sports, like Gridiron and Ice Hockey, have really really nasty injuries...i mean i just saw some nfl player get his knee snapped 90 degrees the wrong way... because of the equipment they use.
i'm talking about the huge body armour, and the helmets and hockey sticks. things that are designed to protect the wearer but not the victim.
do you think this is a fair assumption?

I dunno, i play frisbee too, and the worst i have gotten is also a point blank to the face, luckily i had oakleys on... unluckily the snapped noike bloody twigs. The one ear piece stayed on, teh rest flew a few feet, and i have a nasty black eye for a few weeks. Told chicks i got in a fight . One guy on my team though, who has had a history of bad hamstrings, went for the disc on a long huck. I watched him try to switch gears so to speak, and his stride faultered and he went down... HARD. ripped his hammy in three different places, and one rip need surgury in a month... actually the point before that the same guy took out another guy in a diving knock down, gave the otehr guy a concussion... and they say frisbee is a hippie sport... BAH

Got sacked in HS football as I was fighting upfield to my left. My right knee buckled sideways under the weight of a defender. Befor the paramedics got to me, I was lying on my back with my head at twelve, my left leg and upper right leg at 6, and my lower right leg at 9. Paramedics popped it back in and taped me up.

I had the "unhappy triad". A snapped ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), snapped MCL (medial collateral ligament), and torn cartilage.

Happily, I was fortunate enough to get Dr. Russell Warren (the NY Giants' team doctor) to fix it. I was playing again the following year (with a screw, a staple, and a patellar tendon graft). I generally know when it is going to rain, but other than that, it has held up amazingly well all these years.

Used to play the tape in slow mo', back and forth. Kinda looked like Joe Theisman going down under LT.....
