What the hell is Al Davis thinking?

Raiders have beef with uniforms for Bucs, Panthers

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have asked a judge to prevent the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Carolina Panthers from wearing their uniforms for games in California because they violate the Raiders' trademark rights.

The Raiders claim Tampa Bay's pirate logo is too similar to Oakland's. And the Raiders object to the Panthers' uniforms because two colors -- silver and black -- match those of the Raiders.

NFL spokesman Joe Browne said the issue is one of a handful that remain from a 1996 suit by the Raiders listing multiple grievances against the league. Some were transferred to courts in Los Angeles, where another Raiders case against the league is being fought.

Others already have been dismissed by Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge John Herlihy. He did not rule Tuesday on the Raiders' efforts to seek a court order against the NFL banning those uniforms in California.

Papers filed by the Raiders in the San Jose case say the Buccaneers' logo "is likely to dilute the distinctive quality of the Raiders' mark, thereby lessening its capacity to identify the Raiders and causing irreparable harm that cannot adequately be compensated by an award of damages.''

NFL attorneys argued there will always be overlap among logos and colors. One of them, James Hunt, said "Michigan could say any uniforms featuring predatory cats'' would be prohibited in that state, given that the Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars also have such animals in their logos.

Herlihy seemed sympathetic to the NFL's position.

If California tells Tampa Bay to wear a new uniform for games here, he said, then Florida might say "when the Raiders come to Florida, get that logo off your uniform,'' Herlihy said, suggesting the Raiders might "put a daisy on your uniform'' as an alternative to their pirate.

The Panthers had no comment on the suit.

So, the uniforms look somewhat similar, so a lawsuit is needed? Am I the only that thinks this is nuts?

I agree. I first saw that on sportscenter and thought they were kidding. Al Davis is a complete retard for doing this. I mean come on, just because Carolina has black and silver in their uniforms he's making a big stink? Ugh...

I for one would love to see this. It's sad to see just how pathetic Al Davis is.

This is just because Al and NFL don't get along, and Al is friggin' insane to think that even the casual fan is gonna get the Carolina Pathers or the Tampa Bay Bucs confused with the Oakland Raiders on any level.

Al Davis is about to receive the Marge Schott treatment from the NFL. Besides, he's pissed off LA, he's suing Oakland, where's he going to move next? Salt Lake City? Sacramento? San Antonio? Memphis?

Al Davis used to be entertainment value. Now he's just another moron.

No, that would be the Bucs kicking your ass in the Super Bowl.

I read a snippet of this in Time Magazine this week and couldn't believe my eyes. Al Davis... please shut up.

Al Davis isn't happy unless he has something to complain about. He was a big man years ago in the NFL and now he is pissed off because nobody repects or likes him very much anymore.

Six years later and what's changed? Other than a higher ratio of felons on the Raiders, that is.

Last year, the Raiders signed Javon Walker to a huge contract, had him retire after getting hurt from a mugging (and give the signing bonus back!), but then convinced him to stay.

That move alone speaks volumes about the desperation and incompetency that flows from the top of that organization.

Every year that passes seems to indicate the the greatness of Al Davis peaked with hiring John Madden.
