One Loss College Football Contenders

Here is the place to argue who is #2. :)

Here are the contenders:
USC - Likely ranked #2 in the AP and ESPN polls. USC has Arizona, UCLA (who thought it would be fun to lose to Stanford last nite), and a championship game - not exactly a daunting schedule. But will the lower SOS hurt them?

Florida State - Has Clemson and NC State the next two weeks. Either of these two teams can possibly step up, but neither is playing great ball - rather, each is a disappointment this year. Chris Rix would have to revert to his old ways for a hiccup here.

Miami - Now a darkhorse - they'll need some help from some other teams on this list. Should argue that they beat Florida State, so they deserve it - but then VT can say "we beat Miami." Has Tennessee, Rutgers, and Syracuse - not exactly an awe inspiring schedule. They won't get hurt playing Tennessee, but it won't help their SOS either.

Ohio State - Has Purdue, Michigan State, and Michigan on the schedule. If Ohio State sweeps these games, they will almost certainly have the best strength of schedule in the whole BCS. That will help them - if everything else is equal - why not pick the team that has played the best opponents?

LSU - Has a more difficult schedule than everyone except Ohio State. Alabama and Ole Miss are on the docket. This is gonna be tough for this LSU team, whcih probably needs a little help. But they are higher in the polls than OSU, and they'll get SOS points.

Virginia Tech - These guys should be ashamed of their strength of schedule. They DO have the victory over Miami, which would seemingly make it hard to put Miami over them. Pittsburgh is next.

____________________________________________________

Remember, these are teams that are also elligible for the BCS bowls - which isn't so shabby. It's all come down to these teams, folks. Let's take a look.

bond007 11-02-2003 08:08 AM

USC is a clear cut #2.

as for their remaining schedule... the Pac 10 doesn't have a championship game. the Trojans do, however, have a potentially tough game against Oregon State on Dec. 6th.

Kurant 11-02-2003 08:33 AM

Sad part is, USC doesn't gain much in the BCS numbers by beating Washington state. They will most likely go to 2 or 3 in the polls, which will knock 1-2 total points off they're BCS total. Average of they're ranking in the 2 polls plus .6 for beating the 6th ranked team in the nation.

Miami recieves a full point for a loss, and god only knows where they fall in the polls, if it's no lower then 4-5(You'd think they'd have to stay ahead of FSU In the polls) in both polls, it's quite possible they could still reamin #2, by a slim, slim margain. USC will stay behind FSU since they will also move up in the polls, changing the average of they're poll rankings

The BCS is confusing, I know the formula, but you can probably find the formula on a website, and run the numbers yourself. Miami will be a close 2 or 3, possibly 4 depending on how much FSU moves up in the polls.

The_Dude 11-02-2003 08:50 AM

LSU doesnt deserve to play in the national championship.

Ohio State doesnt either.

If Blow-U plays either of these teams, there will be a blowout. Miami might hold up into the 3rd qtr, but the rest of the teams would die before the half.

bond007 11-02-2003 09:50 AM

Miami is 7th in the latest ESPN poll.

Nimbletoe 11-02-2003 10:31 AM

The way Michigan has been playing lately, I bet they could keep up with or maybe even beat OU... but no, they have to lose to oregon. I'm never going to forgive those stupid ducks

Thanks for the correction. I tried hard to get everything correct, but there was alot of info and I knew I'd get something wrong. :)

I think the Pac-10 has joined the ACC and the Big12 has having off years. Oregon? UCLA? Washington? I'm not sure Oregon State will pose a challenge - I'm more sold on Washington State than I am on Oregon State and I thought Washington State was way overrated.

RoadRage 11-02-2003 11:08 AM

The battle to be Bourbon Street roadkill under the Sooner Schooner.

Southern Cal- #2 in ESPN, probably #2 in AP, #2 or #3 in the computer ranks, #13 BCS SOS (#21 vs all known opponents). Their remaining schedule isn't great (@ Arizona, UCLA, Oregon State) but BCS #2 is theirs if they win out.

Florida State - #3 in ESPN, probably #3 in AP, #3-6 in the computers, #38 BCS SOS (#23 vs all known opponents). Remaining schedule is a bit tough (@ Clemson, North Carolina State, @ Florida), but not enough to surpass Southern Cal without them losing without some really bizarre stuff happening.

Ohio State - Remaining schedule is Michigan State, Purdue, and @ Michigan. One of these three will eliminate Ohio State. Penn State almost did yesterday.

Miami - #7 in ESPN and probably the same in AP. Last night, not only did they lose but they lost horribly, turning into a bunch of crybabies and thugs. A lot of coaches and sportswriters saw that game, and voted accordingly. A two-loss Michigan or an undefeated TCU has a better shot at the Sugar Bowl now.

LSU, Virginia Tech, & TCU basically need everyone above them to lose. TCU plays Louisville on Tuesday, their one true opponent for the season. LSU does have the SOS help of playing the SEC East champion if they win out (and if the SEC can figure who the SEC East champ is). Virginia Tech is thinking Orange Bowl instead of Sugar Bowl.

Rudel73 11-02-2003 12:01 PM

Oregon State will be a huge challenge for USC because you are seeming to forget that they have one of the best running backs in the country! If USC can't stop him they will lose, period!

Artermis 11-02-2003 03:06 PM

USC is no lock even if they win out. Miami will have a lot to say about what happens in the final. They just need to get to #3 to have a legit shot at jumping USC.

fearofmear 11-02-2003 05:25 PM

Of all the one loss teams remaining, USC deserves to go the most and will go assuming they don't lose. Of the other teams, LSU probably deseves to go next assuming we can win out. Miami and Florida State have a more realistic shot at the Sugar Bowl however. IF FSU goes, something is seriously fucked up. I have seen this team in person for five games now and they are highly overrated. Geaux Tigers!

phyzix525 11-02-2003 07:31 PM

Miami should not be able to make it past anyone unless people above them loose. SOS is not going to go up any for them. If USC wins out they are it. If OSU could somehow win, albeit unlikely, they would have the SOS and hopefully some respect in the polls. Florida st still has yet to impress me, WHO have they beat this year? ANYONE? I think every team they beat this year has at least 3 losses. They will certainly loose to Florida. What are the chances that USC gets triped up by UCLA? they are still a good team even though thy lost to Stanford. But really who would have guessed Cal beathing USC. It could happen. But one thing is for sure. OU will definatly be there!

I assume that are are using this "Blow-U" in the context of Blow Out! And as you say - if you want to see football come to Texas! And watch all of the very best of the Texas players kick the shit out of all the teams with Texas in their names - and Dude - If you haven't figured out by now which team all of the best of the Texas players plays for check out OU's roster - If any of the Texas teams were good enough to keep their best players at home and on the south side of the Red, they might be winning - instead of having their collective asses handed to them in a basket.

MikeyChalupa 11-02-2003 08:37 PM

Why are we talking about 1-loss contenders? Because only TCU is 8-0, but they're in puny little Conference USA. GOD I hope they go undefeated and serve the BCS a big shit sandwich.

half the OU roster is from texas. and no, the OU players have just been coached well. the best in texas stay in texas. "blow"-U gets the left overs.

OU's 2nd string qb was a "leftover" after vince young came to texas. last year, all the texas' (the college) recruits were from texas. trust me, we get good recruits, but we just havent done anything extraordinary 'bout 'em.

bish 11-03-2003 06:41 AM

This discussion proves what a joke the BCS is. It just goes to show that the earlier you lose, the better!! It doesn't matter if you lose to a .500 team like USC did, as long as it's early in the season. FSU, Miami, OSU, and LSU have all lost to much better teams than USC, but just didn't lose early enough!! We could argue all day about which of these teams have beaten the best teams. In my opinion, if they all run the table, OSU will have beaten the best teams, followed by Miami, FSU, USC, then LSU.

Boy, wouldn't it be great to see some of these teams actually play each other so all this discussion would be meaningless. Those highly intelligent people running college football know best though!!

captain 11-03-2003 07:21 AM

bish is right. Lose early. Right now it looks as though #2 is Southern Cal's to lose--I know they want to be called USC or "men of Troy" but I'm showing my age.

RoadRage 11-03-2003 11:11 AM

The BCS computer rankings don't take into account WHEN you lose, and the human pollsters aren't supposed to.

CFRC has the probabilities (based on the Massey Rankings) of a team running the table. (Click on the team name.)

Probabilities for the following teams winning the rest of the season (based on known opponents):

Oklahoma - 84.9%
Southern Cal - 85.8%
Florida State - 36.4%
Miami FL - 36.6%
Ohio State - 8.5%
Virginia Tech - 31.8%
LSU - 45.0%
Michigan - 60.7%
TCU - 12.3%
Georgia - 43.9%
Iowa - 17.3%
Texas - 29.4%
Tennessee - 16.4%
Purdue - 22.3%
Washington State - 47.8%

Southern Cal might be #2 because they genuinely are #2. Possibility?

TCU and Ohio State chances don't look too good, meaning that either one would significantly boost the standings versus everyone else just by running the table. Ohio State might not leapfrog Southern Cal with the pollsters, but they would with the ranksters. TCU still needs help even then, like losses by all but one of the teams above them.

It's a shame Northern Illinois lost to Bowling Green, or that Bowling Green lost to Ohio State. Either of those teams would be above TCU, and much more likely to give the BCS the spiked buttplug.

I know that the computer rankings aren't supposed to take WHEN you lose into account, but the AP and Coaches polls sure as hell do. They are a major part of the formula. Why is Florida St. ahead of Miami? Who has FSU beat? Miami beat a good Florida team and, oh yeah, FLORIDA ST.!!

Liquor Dealer 11-03-2003 02:35 PM

So! Let OU play the Horned Frogs in the Sugar Bowl and spot the Frogs 30 points. That ought take care of the problem and no one got left out.

gov135 11-08-2003 01:12 PM

Scratch Miami.

Florida State and Virginia Tech play tonite.

Liquor Dealer 11-08-2003 01:59 PM

I have no idea where TCU is going to finish the year but at this point they are going to have to be given some consideration. They aren't capable of playing much over the level of competiton they have been playing but under the formula they should make it into the top 6 and BCS after this weekend.

The_Dude 11-08-2003 02:38 PM

hopefully, southern miss will beat TCU.

WarWagon 11-08-2003 02:42 PM

Miami is outta here, Ohio State is moving up in the world and will take the next two against Purdue and Michigan. Iowa is done for.

gov135 11-08-2003 08:28 PM

USC, Ohio State, and LSU survive.

Sorry Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Miami.

phyzix525 11-09-2003 03:37 PM

Is the only way the Buckeyes are going to get any respect is when they beat michigan?

Rudel73 11-09-2003 03:47 PM

how can you respect the buckeyes when they struggle against teams like san diego st., bowling green, and penn st.? I mean sure they are a great football team but with their poor performance against teams they should blow out its hard to rate them above the other teams like USC etc...

empu 11-09-2003 04:02 PM

The Buckeyes can earn respect by beating Purdue & Michigan. If they fail to do that then they don't deserve any more respect than they already have.

cementor 11-09-2003 04:48 PM

The Bucks beat Purdue and Michigan, they will likely get the respect they deserve and might get an all expense paid trip to the Sugar Bowl. But beating Michigan will be a large feat. I'd leve to see OU - OSU. Especially, OU's D vs OSU's O.

Only a couple of stumbles left to have an OU - TCU match up! BCS would be toast!!!

phyzix525 11-09-2003 05:07 PM

When you are the defending national champs teams that are decent but have not played to their potential like Penn st, play their hearts out to try and get the upset, knowing that OSU's offense is very conservative and lets teams hang around. if you hang around come the end of the 4th you have a chance of winning. Granted OSU is not the most talented in the top 10, but when your team is coached as well as OSU and you play not to make a mistake and take advantage of the other teams mistakes there is no reason I should be hearing all the shit about how overated they are.

WarWagon 11-09-2003 08:00 PM

V-Tech and Miami LOST their matchups, AND have a worse record. I guess neither of those teams are respectable?

Not to mention OSU's been playing with virtually no running back. I think there is a very big difference between struggling and playing very conservative. Have they struggled some, yes. Would they have a hell of a lot more points if they took a lot more chances on offense? Yes, but they also wouldnt have the best rush D in the nation.

wwcd101 11-12-2003 07:00 AM

I agree.

If OSU proves it on the field and the voter love will come. I still think it will be a trick for them to win out. Winning even 2 of 3 against these last 3 strong teams has to be considered a strong effort.

What a great opportunity for them. It's going to be fun to watch.

Thanks for listening.

That was last year. This year is a different team. Gone is yer best tailback for one thing. When u let teams like Bowling Green and San Diego St hang around and damn near beat ya, it's hard to give ya respect. Like stated before, beat Purdue and Michigan this year, then respect will come back to OSU. At least, that is, till Oklahoma posts a 50+ to nuttin score on ya.

wwcd101 11-17-2003 06:29 AM

About OSU...

This is the same team, just without the guy who would have won the Heisman this year. What a f**k up!

Anyway, what we get to learn this week is does Tressel have the Michigan Magic? Is he the opposite of Cooper? It'll be fun to watch.

Thanks for listening.

Phaenx 11-20-2003 03:35 PM

Cooper just plain sucked. Getting rid of him was the best thing we ever did.

gov135 11-22-2003 12:40 PM

Scratch Ohio State.

LSU plays a big game tonite against Ole Miss.
USC gets another cupcake - but anything can happen in college football, especially rivalry week!

Liquor Dealer 11-22-2003 06:00 PM

LSU just barely squeaked by - USC won big! Looks like it's gonnqa' be USC unless SOS bites them again.
