I just got internet installed in my dorm here in Germany. Things are fine, except for one annoyance--they are using a proxy server, and every 30 minutes or so, it makes me re-enter my username and password. Needless to say, it's incredibly annoying.

My question is this--is there any software that anyone knows of that would allow me to enter this information once and make that thing stop bugging me?

I use roboform for things like that, seems to work for autologins that are form based.

I'll give that a shot. Problem with that is, the web browser has to be up and running for that to work--but the proxy will come back and block IM, Skype, whatever, which RoboForm doesn't handle.

Ugh, this is annoying.

sounds like that it is a method for them to keep people from having open ports and running servers without blocking them, just making it inconvenient.

You could probably automate the authentication. Try writing a batch script that runs wget every 20 minutes

Agreed. But it's still annoying, and I'd like to get around it

I'm curious about this... Any more info? What should I wget (maybe just a text-file somewhere and delete if afterwards)? How would I have the script auto-fill the proxy info if it requires it?

oh that is a great idea. I didn't even think of that possibility. Most FTP applications have automated processes that you can create a schedule to follow. I dunno if you can make it happen as short as 20 minutes, but it's worth a shot.

I would just write a shell script and run it from cron (since I run linux most of the time)... FTP is easy to control from the command line, so is wget, I just need to figure out how to get it to autofill and submit the proxy info if it pops up. No effing idea how to do that...
