DVD-RW won't recognize/burn DVD-R

My 3 month old HP zd8000 has HPs best available DVD burner. I'm assuming it should be able to burn all types of DVDs, correct? I can't get it to recognize DVD-Rs. Normally i'm able to put in any old CD and am able to drag and drop files into the drive to be recorded. However when I put in my DVD-R, all burning options go away and am unable to drag and drop files to the drive for burning - it gives me a copying error every time.

Is it something I'm doing wrong, or is my top of the line computer REALLY unable to burn DVD-Rs? I need to be able to burn both data and video DVDs. Thanks!

PCs that came with DVD+RW drives use HP RecordNow, Sonic RecordNow or Sonic myDVD to burn to DVDs as Windows XP does not support burning to DVDs directly like it does to CDs.

Actually this has nothing to do with Windows. Windows can drag and drop to DVDs just fine. I do it almost daily at work.

The problem is that the drive is a DVD+R/DVD+RW, it makes no mention of supporting DVD-R or DVD-RW. Yes, there is a difference. Make sure you aren't trying to write to a DVD-R or DVD-RW disk.

Well, at least according to this review, the drive specs are: LG GWA-4080N DVD+/-RW Drive - CD-ROM (40x); CD-R (40x write); CD-RW (24x write); DVD-ROM (16x); DVD-R (8x write); DVD-RW (4x write); DVD+R (16x write); DVD+RW (4x write); DVD+R Dual Layer (2.4x write)

Ahhh, I am indeed wrong, I was basing my statement off that support page that (curiously) made specific mention of CD-R/CD-RW/DVD+R/DVD+RW discs and not a single thing about DVD-R/DVD-RW support. With major OEMs, it is typical for them to have drives that are for the DVD+ standards only.
