Parents Need a New TV

And I got the task of finding one for them. The requirements are pretty simple. It shouldn't be more than 32" and it shouldn't cost more than $1100.

I'm not really sure what's good in that price range, but I've found this TV on the Best Buy website: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1134703181778

My mom is concerned about the brand since she's never heard of it before.

Any suggestions on that TV or something within that size and price range would be appreciated.

P.S. I could've sworn TFP had an Electronics forum...

Never heard of Westinghouse? Strange! They were quite large at one time, a great many years ago until they were bought up, used only as a brand name then eventually falling to disuse after a number of years of shoddy product and poor manufacturer support.

Apparently that has changed, and Westinghouse is one of the top 10 (I can't cite this, but I believe it was in Wired) flat-panel brands out there.

One thing they need to know is that it doesn't look like it supports any of the 1024 (i or p) resolutions. Not sure if that is important.

Of course they need to check it out first. There's nothing like dropping a grand, sight unseen, only to find that it doesn't quite add up.

Well, from what I can tell, it supports 720p. My parents aren't picky. At one point they didn't even consider buying an HDTV. I talked them into it.

I'm nto a big fan of Westinghouse. I'd go with Samsung:
Samsung LN3251D 32" LCD HDTV
It's the best in it's price range by leaps and bounds, even outdoing big names like Sony. I had one for some time and it was phenominal.

I'd prefer to physically bring one home from the store. Call me old fashioned. I don't trust online sites with expensive electronics.

They have it at Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. I just linked it because there is more feedback on the tv.

It's a little out of their budget. I'll let them see it though.

Th shipping is free from amazon, too, which puts it in their budget. You can go into CC or BB, to check it out, then get it from Amazon for cheaper.

Service plan is extra: 2 year = $119.99 and 4 year = $229.99
Manufacturer warrentee applies, which is probably like 90 days.

Best Buy's 4-year protection plan is $149.99

And no charge for shipping. Price is about the same. Hmmm, I'll have to let them deicde.

Samsung makes a quality display, and that unit is a nice one.

Showed them the TV. It's too much. The budget is $1000. No more. Any ideas?

The previous generation of the same Samgsung is at $820 on Amazon. I'll see if I can find some at a store. For your price range, you can expect to find lower quality Polaroid or Sharp LCD flat panels.

Polaroid makes decent cameras, but I've found their tvs to be lacking in quality. They are not a name brand like Philips or Sony, and it's clear when you watch or listen to them. They aren't bad, just of a lower quality.

Whatever you do make sure to get a service plan with it.

Yes, that goes without saying. All electronics that are bought in our family also get the longest service plans available.
