As soon as Leopard hits, I'm buying my wife a 24" iMac. When customizing them pre-purchase, you can include up to 4 gigs of RAM, but that adds $850 to the price, from the default of 1 gig.

However, I found a variety of places online that sell 4gb of compatible RAM for between $250 and $300. (example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ory-_-20220258 )

I know upgrading the RAM on PC's is no big deal, and now that iMac's are intel based, in THEORY it should be the same plug-and-play convenience...but I'm still wary, as all things Apple are a big unknown to me (this will be our first Mac).

Has anyone upgraded their iMac's (or any Mac, really) RAM? Anyone heard of any problems using aftermarket memory?

Been there, it's as easy as plug and go. On the new iMac it's on the bottom.

I've done it - it's really no big deal. It's the same as any RAM installation - the only trick is that you have to push harder than you'd like to get the RAM to seat. There's a tactile and audible click when it fits properly.

The only issues I've heard of with aftermarket RAM upgrades on Macs are either people buying the wrong chips (stupid customers) or bad RAM. Neither of those is related to the host machine. It's a just a computer, even with all our hype.

Thanks for the tip. Does the ram i linked too look like the right RAM? All the specs that are listed jive, and it's in the Mac Memory section...

Keep in mind that if the version of Leopard you're getting isn't 64-bit then the system will only use approximately 3.25 GB of that memory.
