They just announced google ads based on where you go, if you care to opt out you can easily by going here

I already opted out of the entire list the first day I heard about this. As to how well that works and/or holds up with time, I'll believe that when I see it.

IMO the almighty advertising dollar is way too pervasive in our lives. E.g., the directed ads and personal data accumulation from tracking of "smart phone", GPS, and similar gadgets annoys me to the point that I'd never get one of those devices unless I knew I could drop off their radar screen. If they want to know something about me, they'll have to pay me for it directly...or so I wish/fantasize.

They have a Firefox browser plugin. Should work on Linux as well.

But I do think it should be opt-in instead of opt-out. Of course very few people would opt in to having their browsing history monitored so that won't work for Google.
