Webware 100 winners announced!

Webware 100 winners announced! | Webware - CNET

Welcome to the 2009 Webware 100! Below you'll find 100 Web apps in 10 categories voted to be the best of the best by Webware readers and users of the apps themselves.

Be sure to also see the new 11th category, Editors Choice, for a list of 12 products that we feel merit inclusion in this year's awards program, even if they weren't big enough to win the popular vote.

Nearly 630,000 votes were cast during the voting this year to pick the best Web 2.0 sites and services. As with the previous years' awards, there were some surprises among the expected winners.

For those that are unfamiliar with the term or its application, CNET's neologism, "Webware" describes the newest, best and most useful websites, applications and online services that make navigating the web so gorsh-darned incredible for us ordinary joes. Without going into the specifics, it is a helpful, ongoing update provided by celebrated technological-authority CNET.com in this still somewhat new Web 2.0 sphere we've created around us; the blogroll is what I'd guess you could call it, catalogs all of what is perhaps the coolest and most popular services in our bookmarks, and on the horizon.

In addition, once a year for the past several years, they have polled their audience of citizens as to what makes their online surfing the best experience possible, proceed to collect the tidal responses into a neat little compendium of the markedly pragmatic & mostly popular "webwares" that you should be highly consider using.

(It is quite unfathomable the time I take to compile two short, descriptive paragraphs )

I've known about this compilation only since I stumbled upon it last year; it really aided in expanding my horizons to sites I had no inkling existed, and made a good impression on me as to why such sites are so wildly popular. Express your opinions about any familiar websites you see, those you may be interested in trying out for the first time because they are found in the Top 100, and some discrepancies within the list in why you never heard of "such-and-such" service.

So, without much more words (of my own, heh) or delay, here is the list of 2009's Webware 100!
(I truly implore you to visit the originating url address' link since the overall layout is more polished than I'll ever re-produce, but for those that like it all in-house, here is a simple text list of the winners.)

Whew! It's a wrap

Wait... I just found this:

Interesting! I haven't heard of some of these before... Zoho is entirely new to me, Scour as well.

That's why I thought it imperative to share the collection this year, now that I recalled its existence, since last year's list helped expand my overall web-networking considerably, and increased my search engine algorithms at least three-fold. (Although this past year I only discovered one new site that's actually on the list, being: Ustream.tv)

What's funny is that I actually remembered about the poll this year one day before the voting ended, (around May 1st) so I took it as serendipity and decided to share it with you all.

I haven't ventured too much outside my "web-clique" box, and I've probably deleted more bookmarks in my folder than I have added, but I just wanted to say that I am now in favor of Grooveshark.

According to my delicious bookmarks service, I've known and had knowledge of Grooveshark since late April of '08, but it's only been in the past two months that I've tried out its functionality and form for more than 15 minutes at a time. As remarked in this thread, ever since seeqpod went thru bankruptcy/restructuring, I've sought out a few viable alternatives to the "music search engine" genre that was left empty when the seeqpod ship officially went down 3-5 months ago. It is a great little service that finds even some songs I think are way too obscure, allows me to check what people in droves have been listening to, and allows the familiar playlist creation feature that nearly all successful music/video sites have implemented standard. It even has a "recommended listening" listing like both Youtube and Pandora flaunt, a simple advice service for similar songs to what you are listening to at the moment. If anything at all, this is great alternative/successor to what seeqpod was, save for that whole "hollawalla" widget (it might have something similar, though I doubt it).

Of the 100(+13) websites featured above, which have you recently found out about, loved its usefulness for your puposes, and would fully recommend to your fellow members, friends, & family alike?

been using grooveshark for a while now.. love it.

yousendit helps me out quite a bit..have a few people that I need to send massive files to and I'd rather not ship external drives or thumbdrives every week. there are others I'm sure. I need to read the list again and see what I like and don't like. I'm usually pretty lazy when it comes to the web, so the more tools the better.

thanks. I don't know how I missed this. I think maybe it was the title of the thread. It's not mysterious enough or something like the other threads.

Thanks, I have close to 50 things to go check out now.

As I sometimes endeavor into productivity on a slow day, I take time to start vague search queries to see where they lead me, in terms of either learning something new, or being included into a group that likes the same unique things I do, too.

I found this quote by a supposed groundworker of Grooveshark, and he explains some of its stances on free online music sharing:
Quote:
Hey Lucas,

I work here at Grooveshark and I just wanted to clear up some confusion–though Grooveshark and Seeqpod seem similar, we don't really work the same way. The content you see on Grooveshark doesn't come from externally-hosted MP3 or remote link. Like Youtube, all the songs on Grooveshark are uploaded directly from our users to a server, and we just index for searching.

If we *were* spidering content from third-party sites, I can definitely understand being a little perturbed (or downright pissed off) that there's no attribution. That's just not cool, and any site providing bandwidth/content/help to the web should definitely get the credit they deserve.

Anyway, sorry for the confusion/lack of info on our end, Lucas, and if you have absolutely any questions/tips/just want to chat, well, we're now friends on Twitter!

Thanks,
Ben+Grooveshark
