New Blackberry + No data plan?
 

My fiance wants to buy a new Blackberry but doesn't want the data plan on it. She has a Blackberry Curve that I used before which she just put the sim card in and the phone / text works fine, she just can't use the internet or e-mail on it which she doesn't care about anyway.

Anyone know if this is still possible if she gets a new Blackberry?

Yep, wife just did this a few weeks ago. Buy it outright and stick your sim card in it. Done deal.

Vigilante, what about if she uses an upgrade to get it? Any idea?

I believe they will refuse to upgrade your device without a comparable plan but if you threaten to quit it will cut through all the red tape ...

Depends what carrier. From what I know, certain carriers require you to purchase the data plan even if it's an upgrade. If not then the phone won't work at all. You best buy the phone outright to avoid this. Have you tried Craigslist?

Yeah, I know in ATT, it was data plan, period. That's why we bought a phone elsewhere and stuck the card in it. My blackberry curve was purchased just before the data plan requirement, fortunately.

I have yet to see this. The phone is still a phone no matter if it connects to the web or not.

I'm pretty sure Verizon requires you to purchase a data plan if you're upgrading to a new blackberry..

don't quote me on that, but I'm almost positive that's how they roll.

^^ The problem with CDMA carriers is you have to make a phone call to change phones or do it online which is still the same process and once the system registers a specific device it refuses to proceed without said price plan.

GSM, on the other hand is quite comprehensive. Stick your SIM card in the phone, power phone on, use phone. When I got my blackberry on AT&T I simply placed my SIM card in it and it worked. The only problem was I added the price plan and now I'm fuckin' addicted!

Dumb question, but then I still use my phone as nothing more than a phone... drives my kids nuts :p, but what is the advantage of a Blackberry or other sophisticated phone if you don't have a data plan? I can text with mine (don't, but can), and even take pictures (again, don't), and have all the features available on a land line, so what else does a Blackberry offer?

And please, no comments on my being a telecommunications Luddite. I get that all the time, already... especially when I can sit beside a ringing phone and not answer it because I'm busy, or just don't want to talk anyone right then.

Blackberry phones and other smart phones just make things easier. I can view, edit and resend spreadsheets or emails almost instantly on my Blackberry. I can hit the web to view a competing ad to see latest trends or how to counter their message. I can do multiple things at once.

I guess it's mainly a work tool, but others like to use it because they think it's cool or they just use it because it's easier to text on or whatever.

I use mine for email and work related tasks just as much as I do for personal tasks.

She's on AT&T, and what I'm thinking she could do is to buy the phone with an upgrade, pay the fee for a month and then just cancel the data plan...

But without the data plan that stuff either wouldn't be possible or would get very expensive very quickly.

Pretty sure they already thought of that and have it hard-wired into the contract.
