Help, my cdrw drive keeps reading

About every 5 seconds or so the light comes on and it clicks a couple times like it's trying to read something. What could it be?

It's a Compaq Presario 5000 runnin ME.

somethings try to access it , the question is what ? The answer hopefully lies in filemon from http://www.sysinternals.com

download it, install it, run it, deselect all the drives except for the CD drive (in filemon) . watch for a program trying to access it, then find that program. If its not obvious what it is, come on back with the info it gave you..

it could be something simple like the indexer, or some tool that watches the drive for media,.. or the disk inserted switch might be faulty, see if the CD's disk letter "eject" menu item is greyed out or not

Thanks for the quick reply

ok I loaded filemon (cool utility btw) and the only files that are being accessed are c:\

I checked the eject by right clicking on the drive and it is not grayed out and it works correctly.

Any other suggestions?

EDIT:: I found something, Explorer is accessing the F drive here's what it says from left to right.

A trojan has embedded itself in your explorer shell, and you need to scan and hope your antivirus prog can get it out and you don't have to reinstall Windows. Same thing happened to me.

it'll work for 30 days. i had a trojan and it removed it well.

crfpilot: does the light come on only when there is a cd in the drive? Or does it keep going even if there's nothing in there. My CDr has been doing similar things, though it doesn't try to read if there's nothing in there. I figured it had just died on me and amsaving for a new one....
