IE shutdown

OK, I'm not a computer guru, but I think I've got a really weird problem. Everytime I click on the IE icon, my homepage loads up for half a second, then I get an error message and it shuts down IE. The only way i can get on is by going through another icon, like checking the mcafee homepage and then going somewhere else. I am running windows xp home.

It sounds like a javascript on some website you visited changed your home page to something with the IE crash code embedded. Try changing your home page to about:blank when you have ti open and stable.

If I had a nickel for every time IE froze my computer . . . well - I could buy another computer for it to freeze.

I know the fix for the original question was something else. But you can change the IE homepage without having to open IE. This is helpful if it keeps crashing. All you have to do is go into "Internet Options" in the Control Panel. This is exactly the same as Tools->Options in IE but by doing this you doing run the risk of IE crashing on you if that is a problem.
