Windows XP service pack 1 vs 1a

I have reformatted my computer (used slate, then Fdisk, then format, so it's totally blank) and I am about to re-install XP Pro. The copy of XP Pro that I have is pretty old (probably was burned about a year ago at least) but it should work fine.

The PC is a Dell dimension of some sort, with a P-3 933 processor and I believe 384 MB of memory, in case you're curious

My question is this. I have service pack 1A burned on CD. But I don't have SP1 anywhere. I think you can install SP1a without first installing SP1, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm going to search on google as well, but I was wondering if anyone here knew for sure.

Thanks in advance!!

All right well I had more time on my hands than I thought, so I managed to find the answer. Here's the link:

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/business/0,3...2129825,00.htm

Here's the relevant explanation:

Microsoft released Service Pack 1, the first major collection of Windows XP bug fixes, in September. The update added Microsoft's version of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which the company had decided not to ship with the operating system launched in October 2001. The revised service pack, version 1a, removes Microsoft's JVM, as ordered by a Baltimore court.

Edit to add: Thank you very much SiphonX!!!

SP1 added microsofts JVM, SP1A doesn't include it, so if you install xp, then sp1a instead of sp1 you wont get it.

yeah you're right, from fileforum:
- Windows XP SP1a does not include or install the Microsoft VM, which provides support for running Java programs
- The title for the Windows XP Service Pack 1 entry in the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel is changed to "Windows XP Service Pack 1a."
