Windows 98 help...

)Since the Microsoft site was nearly useless, I figure Ill ask you guys...

I had some problems gettin online, so I followed the help for the program I use (net zero)

At one point it asked me to add a network client (Client for Microsoft Networks). Which then needed the 98 disk. I have a feeling I wasnt really supposed to do this, because now I have a problem.

When I boot up the computer, I get the mnessage that I am missing "vnetsup.vdx" and press any key to continue.

Followed by "missing dfs.vdx" and the same thing. Then the computer boots up as normal. I havnt experienced a problem yet, but missing files is never good.

(by the way... The internet problem was solved by chooing a differant access number... )

you may have those files... look for them on your HD?

remove the network client, when complete add back then when asking for the files, point to the location of those files.

You can look for them in CAB files. I don't recall the correct syntax but it's something like this...

Pop in your Windows 98 CD or copy the CAB files to your hard drive. At a command prompt, type:

extract -l -a winXX.cab vnetsup.vx_

It'll tell you what CAB file contains the vnetsup.vx_. Next, you'll type:

extract -e winYY.cab vnetsup.vx_ vnetsup.vxd

This will decompress the vnetsup.vxd file.

NOTES:

-- Most of the Win98 files in a CAB are compressed, thus the _ in the filename.

-- The -l (lowercase L) will list the contents of the CAB

-- -a will process CAB files with matching names, such as WIN98_01.cab, WIN98_02.cab, etc.

-- -e will extract the file. You must provide the name of the source CAB, the compressed filename, and the name you'll call it uncompressed

-- Repeat this process for the other file(s) you are missing

I may have the commands mixed up but this should get you started.

Good luck.

I've had a problem using Net Zero myself. For about a week I couldn't get connected at all. What I did was uninstall nz, at work I downloaded the "new" version, and installed it. It worked then. Now I just get disconnected for no apperent reason. I'm probably going to switch to something local, until I can afford the extra for the cable modem/dsl.

Net Zero is not all that much fun.

When I have to go out of town, I often try Net Zero. "Often" means, it never works for me in any hotel I stay .

The cab (file cabinet) drivers never worked for my Thinkpad, however. The detailed response from Rubicon seems worth a try.

I have found that cell phones, and fax machines can help me out more often than my notebook in certain states, pun intended.

Oh, Rubicon, a CJ is still the king, if it is built correctly!

You're the first person to point out that my nick is a Jeep product. I chose it before the Jeep Rubicon came out, actually inspired by a Journey song from the Frontiers album. (you all can keep your Journey comments to yourself) :)

Ok I used to have that same problem a while ago. Except mine included a missing Dynamic Link Library error.

I think the second time it occured (when I fixed it) was after I installed a network card. I reinstalled the drivers and it completely fixed it. The first time I didn't have a NIC and also didn't fix it myself. It ended up getting fixed with a format.

Hope that helps if you haven't fixed it already.
