I have heared some hype about some dvds that only allow itself to be viewed 3 times and then becomes useless.

Has anyone heared anything about this?

They had some articles about it on Fark awhile ago. I think Disney was the main one behind it, not sure how they work though.

I think its a chemical reaction. Once you open the package, the DVD starts reacting with the air, and after a certain time, it becomes unreadable.
This is off the top of my head.... i'll go read up more about it when i have time....

When you open the packaging, the DVD's surface layer starts reacting with air and becomes black (unreadable). Most prob they're going to use it for promotional DVDs and screeners.

According to a comment on the TechTV link you can extend the life of the disk by wrapping it in plastic and putting it in the refrigerator. Hey, sounds good to me. Throw some Saran wrap on it and stick the disk in the freezer. Pull it out a couple of months later and see if it's still watchable. Of course eventually you'd have to buy a bigger fridge/freezer to hold all those DVDs.

That is the very first thing I thought of when I first heard about this rediculous idea.

Not to mention what a giant waste it would be to have all these DVD cases for a DVD that is worthless. Hell, a lot of a product's cost comes just from the packaging.

I think it's a chemical reaction in the disc material itself, not like a coating of dirt on the disc.

Simple solution, buy a DVD Writer, burn the movie you Buy, throw it away (preferably by slingshotting it into the head of the faggot who came up with the idea) and keep the case the DVD came in and place your copied DVD inside it. Voila, it's legal because it's a personal back-up.

or, you could set up a controlled vacuum chamber, with a standalone dvd copier in it. that would work fine.

thats the exact reason its being made, to help stop piracy of films not out on dvd yet.

but that doesn't stop them from making a copy before it completely becomes unreadable. so it just shortens the time for it to be copied.

^Doesnt make any sense, anyone with decent computer skills and a broadband connection can get like ANY movie on DC++, kazaa, etc, cant really stop piracy, besides, if its still readable for 1 usage, then you can copy it..wont change anything

Since people are not paying 10 bucks to see it once in a theatre, they figure you would pay 20 bucks to see it maybe 3 times at home. Probably go the same way as video disc's went-- DOWN THE TOILET.

goes along the idea that people get the discs AFTER the screener was watched for the Oscars or any other critic/review. Its not going to stop piracy, nothing will, but they are hoping to slow it down. AND they are trying to cut down on the high quality pre-dvd movies, the point being HIGH QUALITY, you can't get a cam or ts thats as good as quality as a dvd, hence why they spend money on this instead of trying to stop camcorders in the theater.

Must remember those who want to stop piracy, know absolutely nothing about it ...

most often times people are NOT allowed a personal backup copy, this is a common mis conception in the pirating scene, just read all the fine print on the next movie or DVD you buy see if it says you are not entitled to copy the disk.

Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. CDs supposedly can't be produced for less than the current ripoff prices of 15 to 20 bucks.
DVDs go for what? 15 to 20. Yet they can sell self destructing DVDs which presumably would cost more to manufacture for $7.00. Sounds like someone may be getting ripped off,huh.

I dunno about the idea of them using these discs for the screener copies. I heard my dad complaining about how people in the academy aren't getting screener copies of all the movies up for awards this year. Last year, we had every major movie from the Oscars months before they were released on DVD.

Ya, I forgot what I was talking about. Oh ya, no screener copies, so maybe just for promo movies. Still quite the stupid idea.

Incidentally - for those worried about environmental issues; they claim that the petrol/resources used by the video store and your car as you return the DVD to it are actually more environmentally harmful than just the one DVD...

Not seen any stats, but it's an interesting claim.
