if startx didn't work try typing
append="init 3" and your gui *should* load up. It's been awhile for me, so i'm not positive. Let me know what happens

I think it's 'init 5' for the GUI; 3 for the command prompt - but if startx isn't working then init is unlikely to help.
You can just install KDE from Mandrake; you probably have to go for "advanced package configuration" or similar at install time.

Yeah, I'd reinstall. I assume this is a fairly fresh installation, so there's no data to lose?
My guess is, you left some stuff unchecked in the installer GUI, and you didn't get X or some other components installed or installed correctly. Hey, and flamingpeach----Damn, girl! A cute woman who's on speaking terms with the init system.... I think I'm in LOVE! |

I suggested a reinstall because a complaint about a corrupted file and a failure to startx sounded like more than a configuration issue. And for a Linux beginner.... I just didn't want to give him the vi jitters too early. He'll have time for all that later. ;-)
