AH!!!!! help me!
So i got a new Maxtor hd...... and it will not work right....... so here is info.......
info is here : http://www.maxtor.com/en/documentati...uick_specs.pdf I have...... bios....... v6.00 am11 mobo.... pci ce fc ......... amd anthlon. it was put together in april 2002 and has been running all hardware flawlessly until now. I've done the jumper all kinds of ways.. at first it said it was 32 gig..... then took the jumper off for slave..... it says 131 gigs... hhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeellllllppppppp! |
What brand of BIOS? Phoenix?
The computer is 2 years old, but the HDD is new. Right? Have you run the Maxtor boot utility that came on CDROM with the harddrive? How makes your motherboard? IDE 100/33/66? What kind of ribbon cable? SATA? How many amp's is your PS rated for? How many other devices are you currently running on that same power supply? Give me the break down the power supply channels, if you can. Do you hear the HDD spin up when you boot your computer? |

i tried partition magic just cuz and it said the same thing. that is what baffles me. if it didn't work or went crazy i'd be like.... damn. bu t the fact that it seems ok....... just doesn't wanna show it's full capacity. I have a 17gig as my primary i've had since like 1997 or 98 or so. i have an 80 i bought about a year 1/2 ago. I'm using winxp.... 768 megs of ram.... fix this problem and i'll like thank you and stuff. |

u have the same problem i had. install service pack 1 on your copy of winxp and you should be fine. |
Give The_Dude's suggestion a shot.
Here's where you can download it: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...p1/network.asp Its a large file (approx. 134MB). I have a few more tricks to try if that doesn't work. Good news is that your computer acknowledges the drive (which means its not a power supply problem and the drive is spinning). BTW, its hard to see sometimes if your computer is really fast, but the BIOS information should display about the same time as your computer beeps when booting up. You'll see the manufacturer and version number. If the Service Pack doesn't work out, then I'll need to have the BIOS information. It'll say something like "Phoenix BIOS ver 2.4.33.1 March 23, 1998" as the first few lines of the screen. |
windows operating systems w/o the sp's CANNOT recognize drives greater than 137 gb. i found this the hard way. :)
|
it didn't work. I thought i had ssp1 already..... installed it. didn't help at all.
so in system management it shows... in the little window on top i don't see the drive. in the bottom one it is there. 131gigs i believe i hoped it'd let medo a bigger format but no....... so i brought up partition magic.... and it shows i can partition (not format) it for 131g also. ....... i'll get bios shi t now.... wee |
First of all Windows Sucks but if you guys want to help read the PDF.
This look like a Bios problem. You can try to update it but if you don't have a clue then don't. You could make more problems for your self. In the PDF there is a CLJ jumper. If you put that on this will enable you bios to read the full 250 gig of the drive. The only thing is you will have to install a program that does some tech shit we don't need to get into. All this is on the CD you got with the drive. You must format it and install that program with that cd. But you must use the CLJ jummper. This is the first step to fixing your problem. |
You need to partition your hard drive. Your motherboard probably doesn't support the drive since it is so large. Max for it is 137gb. So to get around this, you have to partition it so that no one drive is larger than 137gb.
|
repeat.... there are no disks!
fearless_hyena told me of the install disk that should have come with it. I will try it soon. if it fails...... oh boy. bad thing is..... i really fuckin need it to work. i am having to use a hard disk someone else needs.... |
Sorry, I was talking about your logical drive. Not physical drive.
With partition magic, split your drive so that your partitions aren't over 137gb each. You should get all your space once you do this. Sorry for any confusion with my previous post. |
ok. i'll try .. if it doesn't work i'll get te bios info. somehoe i forgot..
|
ok z, here is the help.
u gotta have sp1 for this to work. go to control panel -> adminstrative tools now click on 'computer management' now go to "disk management" under the "storage" subheading. here, u should be able to see all the hd's and their partitions and the unallocated space. i suggest that you make all your partitions < 130 gb's cuz defragmenter will have a hard time otherwise. hope this helps! |
The_Dude, he's already trying that with Disk Partition.
If that fails, then we'll try flashing the BIOS. |
yeah.... i even went so far as to format it and fill it up to see if it was a windows fuck up.
it didn't work what am i looking at with bios?? im kinda scared.... |
I'm going to just type all i saw ok?

You need to update the firmware and drivers for your Promise IDE controller.
refer to http://www.promise.com/support/downl...egory=All&os=0 for the files you need. |
