PCI Express becoming standard?

I remember a while ago someone was asking whether to wait for the PCI-Express, but someone said it would not be a while, and it would not be such a significant improvement.

http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/showdoc.html?i=1953

Now that intel is apparently trying to speed up the process of changing standards from the AGP to PCI-Express, should i, or someone who is thinking of building a new pc in the next 3 months or so, wait for this PCI-Express?

and what exactly is it? and how much faster is it? hehe thanks for helping this semi-n00b

I think waiting is going to be a good idea.

This technology is brand spanking new, and with all brand spanking new technology, it needs a while before it matures.

Remember when AGP came out? First there was 1x, then quickly there was 2x, then there was a new version of 2x, then 4x came out, etc etc. It wasn't until the 4x speeds came out that AGP was really implemented and became a standard.

PCI-X is going to be the same way. First you'll see it on the really high end (read: expensive) systems, and as it becomes adopted more it'll mature and have the kinks worked out (read: cheaper).

I wouldn't let PCI-X govern your buying choices at this point. However, the new generation of CPU's (new AMD64's and Intels Prescott) are due in a few months. With the introduction of those we're going to see a lot of new technology, such as faster Serial ATA drives, DDR-2 RAM, and PCI-X.

Unless you're rocking an original Slot A Athlon or a P4 1.5Ghz, you should be ok to hold off a few more months.

Seen it on the new G5's...it might take some time for it to get implemented properly in PC's sorta like Serial ATA..
