And then there was Prescott...

Looks like the new P4's are out and its nothing to get excited about.

From the benchmarks it looks as though we're not going to see any performance blitzes until they ramp up the clock speeds.

In the dollar to performance ratio, it looks as though AMD64 is the way to go!

Intel needs to release a non-Itanium 64-bit processor

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed the reviews of the Prescott. My favorite quotes from Tom's Hardware:

Despite 1 MB L2 cache and some optimizations, Prescott is slower than Northwood in roughly a third of our benchmarks. Software, like many 3D shooters and more serious applications like Lame, MS Movie Maker 2, Mathematica, Cinema 4D or even 3DStudio perform worse than before...So what is the meaning of this "average Prescott" we were given today? The introduction of SSE3 cannot possibly be that important. We only found one benchmark supporting the new instructions, and it does not even benefit from it. At existing clock speeds, Prescott is not faster than Northwood and is thus a pretty useless product, as the socket is meant to be phased out shortly anyway.

ah well, I can only guess that this is Intel's last hurrah before moving to a new pin-standard. Either that, or there's some Prescott-god-chip waiting in the wings, and Intel's letting people see these shitty ones now, just to say, "hey this is the lowest we have to offer, look how it stacks up against the competition."

Or maybe I'm wrong altogether

LoL Yeah I read the Tom's Hardware review as well. The dull performance is quite amazing.
