AGP and Athlon XP retiring?
I was just reading the roadmaps for SiS and VIA chipsets for 2004. I'm starting to think that both the AGP and Athlon XPs will probably not be used more then a year or two more for mainstream use.
What are you guys thinking about this? Going to wait for the new technologies to get a firm foothold and go for them later or going to stay with the AGP and Athlon XP still? |

In regards to the Athlon XP, yeah, I'm pretty sure that will be phased out shortly - AMD has really been pushing their Athlon 64 chip lately, and with good reason (it rocks ). I'm just hoping that prices will go down, which they most likely will. Forgive my ignorance though, but what would AGP be replaced with?

It's not a really a question of what AGP would be replaced with. It's going to be replaced with PCI Express. It will be faster than 8x AGP. AGP slots will be rendered useless basically.

People tend to mix up the term "obsolete" with the phrase "not the best."
An Athlon XP Barton 2500+ and the Abit NF7-S motherboard with a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra came out a solid year ago. Are they obsolete? Ha ha, no way. Are they not the best? Yeah, there's definitely better hardware out there. My Athlon XP 1900+ with PC2100 RAM and GeForce 4 TI4200 is not obsolete, and it's two years old now. Computers aren't obsolete in the gaming industry until 3 years down the road usually (if bought when the hardware was at its best). -Lasereth

yea, AGP will take a while to go away. think of how many agp graphics cards are out htere. besides, who would spend another several hundred dollars to buy a new gf card and mobo when they can easily keep their current agp graphics card that will run most games just fine. i mean, really, do you need 200+ fps in any game?
