Good raid card?

I haven't ever messed with raid hardware, but I'm thinking of using 2 60GB on a RAID 1 (mirroring) for my os and data. After it taking so long to configure and get all my stuff back, I don't want to loose it or back it up to CD-Rs as 60GB+ would take forever.. then there's the suffling of cd's to find what I want

Can anyone suggest a good raid card that isn't thru the expenses roof?

Motherboards that support RAID are ubiquitous and drives follow suit. Instead of patching your system to handle a RAID, define a RAID you desire, then follow through.
Explanations are <a href="http://www.acnc.com/04_01_00.html">here</a>.

I have had good luck with my systems, but, I did not use add on cards. Also, there are software RAID's and hardware offers of Redundant Drives.

Use your own discretion, but, don't try to add a card to a buss that doesn't understand the full logic.

You cant get a silk purse from a sows ear.

Or, she might look nice now, but will she ......No more metaphors, get a new board that handles a RAID.

Thanks for the replies. This is all info I already found, but wanted to verify

I would love to get a board with RAID built in, but the account balance says no. Guess I'll have to do some more side work either way to get a good RAID card,or even a RAID-On-Board Mobo.

Thanks again.

You can get 3ware cards on ebay for between $30 and $75. I bought a 3ware 3W-6410, which is a 4-port ATA66 card, for $75. Works like a charm!

All other ATA cards, as far as I know, require software assistance for the RAID part of the job. Mainly from the BIOS, and a little from the OS, I believe.

Note the bolded "ATA66", this going to cause problems with OS/Gaming speeds, yes? If so, I'm thinking an onboard RAID might be better.
