Whats the best application to play AVI files with?

I have Windows Media Player and Real Media Player, but neither of those seem to want to play .avi files, does anyone know what the best programme is to play these sort of files?

(sometimes WMP will play the audio but not the video...)

I use WMP to play all my video files. It sounds to me like you don't have the proper codecs installed (I've had that problem before). What I usually do is search on google for the k-lite codec pack. With that installed, I've never run into a file I can't play. Also, you can download the real and quicktime alternatives, and play those files from a classic WMP.

Hope that helped!

Yeah, that means you are lacking in the codec department. Get DivX (the source of 90% of these problems), and the K-Lite Codec Pack

You could also get VideoLAN. This plays anything.

When you're lacking a codec Gspot is a very nice proggie to find the name of what you're missing.

I use BS Player and Zoomplayer almost exclusively.

I have an old (pre-ad) version of radlight. The skins are nice but the best feature is the scroll wheel zoom.

I use Winamp for all of my media needs, but you might still need the Divx codec for .avi files, maybe someone could back me up on that?

I've tried DivX, Winamp, WMP, and some others I can't remember. None of those could measure up with the compatibility I found with VideoLan (VLC). It's works amazingly well!

Edit: Oh, and never install codec packs. More often than not they cause problems more than fix them. Instead, use GSpot to find out what codec you need, and download it individually. The only codec pack I would recommend installing would be FFDshow. Works wonderfully.

Media Player Classic is by far the most stable and most versatile media player I have used. With the right codec you can even play realplayer files with it. A google search will find it easily.

just be sure that if d/l codecs from kazaa to run a virus check before you open it, there may be nasty things attached.

I like lite alloy. Gets the job done, runs REAL quick, etc. I use Video Lan to view things as they download, but as far as I can tell, the interface sucks and jumping around is somewhat imprecise. Great program for screening your dls, though--kicks the hell outta avipreview.

You guys REALLY use winamp or wmp to view video files? To each his own, I guess.

I strongly recommend Mplayer. You'll have to install Linux to use it, though.

Not entirely true. I *think* this is the page for Win32 MPlayer, but it's apparently down for a couple days so I'm not positive.

I prefer Xine myself, but again, its a linux only app...

Far better than Mplayer in my mind, but opinion is all subjective.

In Windows, I would suggest VLC. It works fantastically well.
