burning .tar files

I downloaded some program and I need to burn the three files to three different cds to get it to work, I think. They have a .tar extension. Anyone know how to do this.

You need WinRAR from http://www.rarlab.com/

Winzip will open a .tar file. You can get winzip at www.winzip.com.

A tar file is kind of like a zip file -- a container that doesn't compress. It stands "for tape archive," for back when tape backups were widely used.

Here. The first file has the file extension ".permissions" ? Then there are files labeled "tda-cs3a.001" . The only thing different about them are the file extensions which go from "001" to "037". The last file has the same name as the rest, but has the extension ".sfv". I changed that to a .doc and there was a list of all the other files, and like a code next to each of them. Here is a sample:

tda-cs3a.001 1c088365
tda-cs3a.002 1764d74f
tda-cs3a.003 c963d173

Here is the picture:

yep. an sfv file is a file used to do a crc check against a group of files, verifying their integrity.
(crc - cyclic redundancy check)
(sfv - Simple File Verification)
an sfv is similar to a cue file for example, in that it's just text and you do not need to change any extensions to view it, simply right-click and open with notepad.

anyways, on to the files themselves...

the .001 etc, are .rar volumes. their extensions can vary, from simple sequential numbers as you have, to part#.rar to .r01..

anyways, you need winrar. once you have it, navigate to the folder containing these .001 etc files (when you unpacked the .tar it should have separated them into cd1, etc...but whatever. point is, you have 3 separate 'batches' of rar 'volumes' to extract)

click on the first .001 file, and then click 'extract' in winrar.
do that for all 3 cds. (pay attn to where they get extracted).

these 3 cds likely consist of image files in some format (most commonly bin/cue) you will need a burning program such as nero to burn these. if you need more info on burning cd images, of course post again.

oh, and to take a screenshot, click your 'prtscn' (print screen) button on your keyboard...now it's in your clipboard. open mspaint or photoshop, and paste your clipboard contents into a new file.
there's your screenie

oh, and this is going to computer forum

Thanks for the help, but I'm still lost. Here is what I have done so far:

I downloaded the three .tar files.

I used winrar to extract the contents of one of those files to a folder. The contents were those files that I listed earlier.

Now winrar isn't recognizing them as anything, but I opened one in winrar and extracted it's contents to a folder. I ended up with a 700mb .bin file and a 7kb .cue file. If I try to extract any of the other files that I talked about in the other post it just extracts the same bin and cue files. Are they all like combining to make these two files. I mean the file i extracted the two filse from is only 15mb, and I ended up with a 700mb file. What am I supposed to do with these two files. I can only burn one image file at a time, and nero doesn't recognize the .bin file.

This is correct, if you don't have all the volumes that need to be "combined" to make the 700mb file that gets extracted then you will get errors about missing/corrupt files.

As to burning the bin/cue files in nero, you use the "burn image" option in nero, and then open up the cue file. the cue file tells nero how to "read" the associated bin file.

Hope that this explanation is clear enough for you to understand.
