To make it look busier than it is, more intimidating. But most of the time, its just so the admins aren't just paying to keep an empty server open, as they do get used sometimes.

I only idle people's channels by my own choice. Mainly just to show my support.

Idling in IRC chans is quite poinltess unless of course it is idleRPG, which for the first 30 levels or so is fun then you realize, what the hell am I doing.
But yeah, I mostly saw this happening in game clans oddly enough. Nowa days I am forced to idle in a lot of chans due to being a server owner on a irc network. I just cant win.

When I used to be on IRC all the time I used to idle in channels of friends, to help support them (as someone else said). Every now and then I may speak.. but overall I was idle...
Join a bunch of channels so there's always a convo happening somewhere... |

I idle many IRC channels.
First there's #tfp (on irc.shadowfire.org) I idle in there 1) because then it is always ready for me to jump in on the conversation and 2) because it's good to look in periodically when I'm not using it to make sure everything is still going well and nothing is getting out of hand. I also idle in a few channels on irc.freenode.net. Most of those channels I idle in because I use them for technical questions every now and then, and I peek in every now and then to see if there are any questions I can help with. There's another channel on that server I idle in because I'm friends with some of the people in there and, again like #tfp, by idling I can always jump in the conversation at any time. Basically, I think if one has a constant connection, there's no reason to not idle in the IRC channels you frequent.

I idle in a few rooms for various reasons...its nice to have a convo that spans 14 hours without having to be available all day-plus you can save logs of other's convos in case some cool linkage is posted in your absence
