CPU Temps

Alright, I was running the PCMark04 test on my new computer with SpeedFan 4.14 running at the same time.
Under idle I am getting a 50C temperature and during the PCMark04 it got up to 64C. I was getting worried and then the screen went black but the computer was still running, I turned it off and then turned it back on. Everything is fine.

3.2 GHz Pentium 4e (Prescott) with stock cooler and stock everything.

Anything wrong/help?

um 64 C is realy hot for a p4 (147 F) it sounds like your system overheated and halted.

i run my p4b 2.53 overclocked to 2.85 and i dont even hit 125F (51C) at a full load.

i would invest in a new heat sink and some good thermal grease. arctic silver is what i prefer, but any good brand will do.

just some more questions for you. when you put the stock heat sink on, did you put thermal grease on it? and if you did how much did you put on. how is the airflow in your case?

50C for a prescott at idle is low (I've seen 55), while 64 isn't that high either (70-80 is the max). Dilbert's P4 doesn't get as hot because it's not a prescott... My own 2.6 Northwood (HT, 512kb cache, C version) is 33C at idle, and tops around 45C. (using zalman cooler. stock cooler produced 54C at full load)

The heat *might* be a problem, but it shouldn't be. Getting a different CPU fan might be a good option, if only because the prescott fan is LOUD.

Well I just purchased a Thermaltake rear case fan with step up levles so I hope that should exhaust some of the heat and maybe lower the CPU temps a little bit as well.

Yep, I was surprised too when I saw the difference. It's really silly, considering there's not much to show for it - the speeds are generally the same, they just run a lot hotter. And they're really loud too, especially the new socket 775 processors - those coolers ramp up to hurricane speeds and sound levels.

That's the main reason I still sell people the older 478 processors if they want a quiet system; at least there's a choice in coolers. In time that'll happen to the new socket, but until then, I won't recommend them...

I was dissapointed at the sound level from the stock cooler for my Athlon 64 3000. Typically stock coolers are reasonably quiet, but this one aint. Im gonna have to find a new one at some point

Interesting! I've only read press reports/reviews on the 775 chips. Haven't seen any "in the wild".

Oh, we've had them since the beginning of July. Haven't sold that many of them, mainly because of the extra cost of DDR2 (if the mobo doesn't do DDR1), and the PCI-X videocard. At the moment, the 478 processors are still better IMHO, because of the support and reputation. And the cooling options, of course.
