wmp video codec problem

i have a bunch of episodes of naruto that used to work. but without moving them or changing them in anyway. for some reason a few of them dont work anymore. when i open the video its says something along the lines of "requesting codec"---"downloading codec"---"error with codec" then just the audio will work. only a few of the episodes are having this problem. also i am using windows media player. but i downloaded wimamp to see it if would do the same thing. and sadly nothing got fixed. i can tell which ones arent going to work because when im in the folder all the video filesare sotred the ones that are going to work show the first frame of the show and the ones that dont work have the wmp icon. i have the new window media player ver. 10 . thanks for your help!

Which codec? Gspot is a good program for learning the contents of avi files.

And VLC will play just about any video file (and more) without aditional codecs.

Sometimes the automatic codec download works better if you try to open it WMP classic. I have a hard time getting any codec to download with WMP 10, but if I open it in classic it downloads fine.

If that doesn't work, GSpot will work.

I used a program called "video inspector" a couple of months back and it worked great.

It told me exactly what audio/video codecs were being used.

Like vinaur said, use vlc. Plays anything you want without the bloat or need for external codecs.

Got the same problem on WM10 (just had to install it recently for certain websites demanded I use it). How do I find the old media player? Or is there a codec pack I can download.

Yes I use VLC at times, but I would prefer WMP for my wife (she finds it much easier to use).

thanks.

Windows Media Classic is not a MS product.

You can read about it and download it from here. It is free.

The old media player, which I mistakenly called 'classic,' which is the name of another video player as flat pointed out, can be found...

My computer --> C: (whatever drive the windows install is on) --> Program Files --> Windows Media Player

Inside is an icon that should read mplayer2 and looks like a studio clapboard (I think that's what they're called).

Like I said, I can never get the automatic codec download thing to work with WMP10, but if I open the file with the older WMP then it usually solves the problem. Once the codec is downloaded then it usually opens in WMP10.
