Blue screen of Death

Specs first
Dell 4100 1.1 G 384 meg ram
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128 MB
Win 2000
Service pack 4

my problem is I can either have the service pack or Direct X 9.0c on my computer but when both are on it just toasts it, I mean start from scratch toasting. Now normally I would say screw it to the service pack or to directx but, the iPod wants SP4 and all of the newer games want directx 9.0c.

Any ideas, would be much loved

No idea. I might suggest you upgrading to Windows XP, as Windows 2000 is 5 years old.

I haven't messed with 2000 in so long, I'm not sure really what to tell you. Have you tried looking at the Microsoft Knowledgebase or looking on Google?

I'm running 2000 SP4 with DX 9.0c on this very machine. My guess is that a specific piece of hardware doesn't like the combo. I'd do some google searching on your video card and other components to see if anyone else has had the problem.

What's the stop code? Can you safe boot?

I've heard of this with SP4 but haven't seen it. No problem on a couple win2k boxes here and those of many clients. There's probably a driver conflict involved.

Which ATI drivers are you using? What about soundcard drivers? Have you checked <a href="http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P3C_4100&os=WW1&osl=EN">Dell for 4100 updates</a> for install before sp4?

At minimum, try recovering without a reinstall. What steps have you attempted before the reinstall?

Stuff is happening so I'm bouncing in and out of tfp. May not be too responsive. The extra info would be good to figure this out though.

Thanks for the ideas, I really didn't want to put win xp on, (blotted in my op.) I will make sure I have all of the most updated drivers and give it another try this weekend.

Recovery doesn't work, safe mode won't work either.

Thanks for the ideas I will give you feedback after the weekend

I know that this sounds like strange advice, but how are you putting sp4 on? If it's a slipstreamed version, maybe you should start from a fresh 2000 install and then sp4, then directx.

I've also noticed (however weird this may sound) that windows seems to be more stable when you actually do the base windows install and then install ALL of the service packs in order. It seems to me that windows is more stable that way then it is by jumping direct to the newest service pack.

Either way are you installing the drivers first or Sp4/Directx before the drivers?
