Any thoughts on this speaker set?

Hello,

I came across these speakers in a store: KLH Platinum Series

Details about the speakers

They are selling for under $200 canadian. I don't have any speakers currently, and I wanted something basic I can hook up to my TV/mp3 player/DVD player. I don't have much funds to spend on this sort of thing, so when I saw this setup I was very interested in obtaining it. Any thoughts?

Thank you.

If money is the primary concern, sound quality is obviously secondary. Truthfully anything you get at that price point (what is that, like 5 or 10 bucks US??...) isn't going to be that stellar. I'd say get whatever looks coolest.

I prefer to think of it as a balance. I'd love to have audiophile-quality studio speakers, arranged at the correct sonically-sweet spot, with appropriate anti-reflective padding around the room, tuned to the correct resonance frequencies, etc. but I can't. On the other hand I also don't want a bunch of tin cans hooked up with string to an amp. So I'm wondering about this set since it seems like a good deal.

Hey now - don't make me come over there, EH?

Although coolness is always an important factor, and they do look pretty cool I think.

I have a big problem with these little sattelites mated with a woofer. The primary problem is that the receiver still pumps out full range sound to those little things...unless you've got a high end receiver. I'd look for something that can handle that a bit better. Open up your budget just a little, and see what you can find. A normal setup will sound MUCH better, and if you shop right, and are patient, can be not much more money.

Would it also work if I was to put a passive cross-over between the receiver/amp and the sattelites? I can get one of those fairly easily.

Well Prof, KLH isn't too bad. I'd feel a whole lot better if you put your hard earned money towards some higher quality gear.

Do you really want 5 channels? If so, then obviously the cost of the units get spread a little thin in spite of the initial wow factor.

Have you heard the speaker set? All at once? What was driving them? If the place you saw them was using a spiffy receiver and you're going to power them directly from your TV, then know it will certainly sound different.

For me, even though I have 5 channels of power ready, I am only currently using two. (Long story there) But just think that my dollars went towards just two speakers instead of four, five, even six. I was able to jump up in quality. I know, not everybodies favorite, two channel. Yeah, I sure would like to hear the THX guy fly behind me before a movie, but I still think I got a good deal.

Consider getting maybe a mini audio system. For example, maybe this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882108113
I just kind of randomly grabbed one for illustration, but you get my drift. Most of these should have an input or two, and that could easily accommodate your needs. Just a thought.

Next, consider buying used. The audio market is a constantly moving one, and people move up and sell things all of the time. This is likely your biggest bang-for-the-buck. Out on Audiogon right now (8/30 @ around 9:40pm) there is a pair of PSB Alpha speakers. At $110, they would kick ass on a good bunch of speakers at this price, and you would still have about $80 after shipping for a sub if you want one.

So there are some options. If nothing else, the main rule here is to listen to the stuff before you buy it. Never buy anything you've never heard before. Yeah, I know that sort of thrown off my rule of buying things at Audiogon. Still... There are brands you can trust to work right... (okay, I'm sinking on that one....)

If you listen to some other stuff and decide on your original idea, go for it. It's your money! And speaking of money, the currency exchange right now is $200cad = $167 US.

Still stuck? Post here or feel free to PM me.

AHA! I FOUND IT!
I was trying to think of this paroduct last night when I posted, but it didn't come to me until now. This is a well-reviewed and well-liked product. I still can't find the price, but take a look anyway. It comes in 2 or 5 channel.

I know they do have a dealer in Canada, so that's good. The US...they must have lost their dealer!
