Verizon Wireless Broadband Access

Anyone try this yet? http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/m...band/index.jsp

It's expensive, but it would be worth it for me if the speed is as good as the claim it is.

That's blatant misrepresentation. Bursts up to 2mbps is about half of what I get - they're talking megabits per second there. Real world, you're looking at a maximum download rate of approximately 100-150KBps and I suspect that would be only for a few customers who have remarkably good signal. More probable is in the 60-80KBps range, which still beats the hell outta dial-up, but isn't anything too specacular.

I don't have Verizon Broadband, but do have plain NationalAccess. Have had it for 4 years, now. When it first came out it was $99 a month for unlimited access. Now it is down to $59 a month. I use a AirCard 555, which isn't rated for Broadband. I travel all over the US and While there are a few dead spots, some whole states, i get amazing coverage. It is pretty fast in some places, but slow as death in others. It is great for just regular browsing, email and such, but wouldn't want to try online gaming, for sure.
As for the speed, i have tried some of the online spped monitors and it usually runs around 112KBS. How correct these monitors are is for someone else to say.
I am happy with it and highly recomend it if you do a lot of travelling.

We are testing it out in NYC. My boss uses it to commute on the train from NYC to a town in PA near the Pocono mountains.

D/L speeds ranged from 300KBps in the city to ~128 further out. Like any cellphone you do hit dead spots where you have no access. So far we haven't seen it switch over to the 14.4KBps secondary network.

You need to buy the card and it is pretty large and bulky. Looks like you can get the unlimited service for $60/month if you have a Verizon cell phone. Works on both OSX Macs and PCs.

seems to be one of those things i'll enjoy in a few years when it's more ironed out. the joy of being in a college town is that there are enough open networks that i can usually catch one in most public places...but it'll be a neat trick to have that work everywhere.
